Zella Kathleen
Hook
July 12, 2012
Zella Kathleen (Hamar) Conkling Hook was born on April 26, 1922 to Charley Francis and Nora Mae (Settles) Hamar in Putnam, OK and died July 12, 2012 in Weatherford, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 6 days.
She was the 3rd of 8 children. As a child, she lived with her family in OK City and Cloud Chief, then settling on a farm South of Thomas, OK. Zella learned household tasks, helped with outside work on the farm and helped take care of her brothers and sister. Zella attended Jefferson country school and Thomas High School. She became a Christian as a young woman and loved and served the Lord all of her life.
Her Dad insisted she learn how to cook before she got married. She accomplished that task and was married to George Conkling on December 25, 1940 in OK City. They lived on a farm NE of Weatherford, OK where they raised their 3 children: Frank, Bertha and July. George passed away in 1963.
Zella graduated from beauty school in 1967, worked in the Smart Shop in Weatherford, and married Dean Hook in Nov. 1968, adding step-children, Carl Hook and Dorothy Dunnaway to the family. Zella and Dean made their home in Weatherford. They enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and playing bridge and rook with their friends. Dean passed away in 2007.
Zella was a lifetime member of the Modern Mrs. Club for over 65 years. She was an accomplished cake decorator, a talent her grandchildren certainly enjoyed on their birthdays. Zella loved her family and friends, flowers, pretty clothes, a spotlessly clean house and hummingbirds. She will be remembered for her pretty smile, her generosity in helping others and the way she spoiled her family with their favorite foods and all the delicious meals.
Zella is survived by one son, Frank Conkling and his wife Carol of Weatherford; 2 daughters, Bertha Nickel of Stillwater and Judy Coffey and her husband, Len of OK City; one stepson, Dr. Carl Hook and his wife Sandra of Norman, OK, one stepdaughter, Dorothy Dunnaway and her husband, Larry of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Amber Morlan and her husband, Joe of Weatherford, Drew Conkling and his wife Amy of Locust Grove, OK; Bret Nickel and his wife Gina of Denver, CO; Kirk Nickel of Philadelphia, PA; Cy Coffey and his wife Natalie of Edmond, OK, Lisa Schneider and her husband Kris of Edmond, OK; Cori Loomis and her husband Michael of OK City, OK and Dr. Kevin Hook and his wife Kristin of Tulsa, OK; great-grandchildren: Cooper and Cord Morlan; Rhett and Brock Conkling; Jackson and Grant Nickel; Jordan, Austin and Jaiden Coffey; Addison and Blake Schneider; Austin, Carter and Trevor Loomis; Kyle and Kate Hook.
