Woodie Brod Sylvester was born August 2, 1917, in Chilton, Texas to Woodie Alvin and Ida Marie (Brod) Sylvester. On September 11, 2022, at the age of 105 years, 1 month and 9 days, our loving father, grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great-grandpa, went to be with his wife, Mattie, and our Lord Jesus, which is better by far. Woodie will be missed by his family, a host of friends and his community.
Woodie and Mattie Elizabeth Adams eloped and married on August 9, 1938. At his passing, Woodie was the oldest known male in Oklahoma. They had three children, one son, Sam and two daughters, Jana and Sue. Woodie served his country during WWII in the 927 th Signal Battalion. He landed in Casablanca, North Africa on Christmas Eve 1942 and his unit fought from North Africa to Sicily to Italy to France to Germany. He began his career in the theatre business in Lubbock, Texas and various locations in Oklahoma until he purchased the theatre in Weatherford in 1965, which he and Mattie operated until their retirement in 1980.
Woodie was a city commissioner for nine years and was involved in the process of bringing the 3M Company to Weatherford and also the development of Rader Park. Woodie was very active in the Weatherford Rotary Club (a Paul Harris Fellow), Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion Post 091 (a member of American Legion for 65 years). He loved to hunt and had a passion for building model trains. He was also a dedicated and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Weatherford.
Woodie is survived by his son, Sam Sylvester and wife, Gwyn of Eufaula; two daughters, Jana Hale and husband, Doug and Sue Nabors and husband, Tommy all of Weatherford. He is survived by six grandchildren, Travis Hale and wife, Kim, Heather Hale, Kim Brannon and husband, Daland, Jeff Sylvester and wife, Lisa, Chad Nabors and wife, Julie, and Craig Nabors and wife, Michelle. They family appreciates Dr. Badgett, Ashley, Morgan, Kim, Shantel and the girls at Homestead Assisted Living for all the love and care they provided for Woodie. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
