Luvern was born February 2, 1920 near Fay, Oklahoma to William Linn and Emmaline (Carpenter) Widney and passed away Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Masonic Home of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.
Like so many early Oklahoma homesteaders, the Widneys initially lived in a dugout home.
Luvern was the 13th and youngest of the Widney family. She, along with several of her siblings, attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Luvern was married on June 8, 1941 to (James) Roy Chastain. They lived in Arkansas for several years, where Roy worked as a building contractor. They returned to Weatherford in 1970. Roy died on February 8, 1972. Luvern retired from 3M in 1985.
Luvern and Roy had three daughters: Caroline, Janice and Lynette.
After retiring, Luvern was active in her church as church clerk, pianist, and Sunday school teacher for a number of years. She was active in the Pioneer Center as a RSVP member; also a member of Pioneer Quilters, acting as Secretary. She enjoyed china painting and craft classes, and was a very talented porcelain painter. She also participated in the Pioneers Singers Music Program. Her church and her family were her main interests.
Luvern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, eight brothers, and one daughter. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Don (Janice Chastain) Britton of Gilbertsville, KY, and Mrs. Jay (Lynette Chastain) Martin of Louisville, KY; eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Masonic Homes of Kentucky, c/o Bruce Lott, for Luvern Chastain, Judy House, 3701 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, KY, 40207, or your favorite charity.
