Dr. William G. Waggoner
William Gene Waggoner, retired Southwestern Oklahoma State University pharmacy professor, passed away Tuesday Dec. 5, 2018 at his home in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Bill was born Sept. 22, 1928 in Tonkawa, OK, second son of Murrell and Edith (Powers) Waggoner. He attended Pampa, Texas schools until his sophomore year when he enrolled in the Claremore Military School in Oklahoma.
Bill graduated from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX in 1949 with a BS degree in chemistry. In 1966 he graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a BS in Pharmacy, earning Oklahoma and Texas State Board of Pharmacy Certificates. He then attended the University of Mississippi and obtained his PhD in pharmaceutics in June, 1970.
He was a member of the APhA, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, Kappa Psi, and Rho Chi. He received the Fox-Vliet Scholarship Award when a senior in Pharmacy School, and was among the first recipients of the National Defense Educational Act Fellowship in pharmaceutics.
Since 1947, he held the following positions: undergraduate teaching assistant, general chemistry (1947-49); owner Midwest Processing Co. in Pampa, Tx (1949-62); undergraduate teaching assistant in pharmacy preparations, SWOSU (1965-66); graduate teaching assistant, dispensing pharmacy (1967); instructor, pharmacy calculations (1966-69) and physical pharmacy. He was Professor of Pharmacy at SWOSU from 1970, retiring in 1993. He was then very active in the Oklahoma Retired Educator's Association.
On Sept. 1, 1950 he married Eleanore M. Hammond, who was Assistant Professor of Language Arts at SWOSU from 1963 through 1990. Bill was a 32° Mason, member of Kiwanis and a Life Master in bridge competition. He enjoyed cooking, chess and ping-pong.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, and son Todd Alan Waggoner. Survivors include his daughter Edith Ruth, her husband Lyle L. Miller and grand-daughter Laine Elise Miller, all of Texas.
