Funeral services for Warren Earle "Scooter" Nell, 87 year-old former Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017, 10:00 A.M. in "The Chapel" of Lockstone Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 am May 11, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Artesia, New Mexico.
Warren passed away May 2, 2017, at Covenant Specialty Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. Interment has taken place at Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford, Oklahoma under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Monty Leavell will assist and Carroll Lockett will officiate at the service.
Warren was born February 9, 1930 in Hollis, Oklahoma, the son of William Bryan Nell and Crystal (McCarty) Nell.
On August 29, 1955, he married Shirley LaVonne Steward in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and the couple came to New Mexico in 1957 from Oklahoma. They lived in Aztec and Tucumcari. In 1969, they made Artesia their home until 2011 and the couple then relocated to Lubbock, Texas.
Warren rodeoed and farmed after high school graduation and then served in the US Army and was the Master Sergeant of Company D of the 120th Combat Engineer Battalion of the 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. Later he graduated from Southwestern State University at Weatherford, Oklahoma where he received a degree in secondary education. Nell attended mortuary school in Dallas, Texas and became a licensed mortician. Warren began his teaching career in Aztec, NM where he was a teacher, coach, counselor and high school principal. Warren graduated from University of New Mexico with his Masters degree and was the Superintendent for the Tucumcari Public Schools. While in Tucumcari, he successfully wrote the first Title I program approved by the New Mexico State Department of Education. Nell and two other colleagues founded the New Mexico School Administrators Association, and he is a past president of this organization. Warren became the Superintendent of the Artesia School District in 1969, he retired from education in 1985 and became the executive vice president of Western Bank, a position he held until his 65th birthday. Warren developed and invented a paint roller cleaner and was issued a United States patent. He and his wife, Shirley continued to live in Artesia until 2011, where Warren enjoyed playing golf, traveling, hunting, fishing, gardening and family activities.
Warren was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and was a Sunday school teacher. Nell was involved in many community projects, during his tenure in Artesia. He served as President of the Board of Directors of the Artesia Chamber of Commerce, President of the Artesia Country Club, President of the Eddy County Fair Board, President of the Artesia Little League, served on the Artesia Historical Museum Board and Nell was a member of the committee that brought FLETC to Artesia. Nell was named Superintendent of the Year for the State of New Mexico and he was inducted into the New Mexico School Administrators Hall of Fame in 2008.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Shirley, of the family home, daughter, Lisa Robinson and husband Rex of Carlsbad, New Mexico; son, Charles Nell and wife Laura of Lubbock, Texas; brothers, WB Nell of Hollis, Oklahoma and GQ Nell and wife Donna of Lubbock, Texas; sisters Geraldine Carrick and Wanda Faye, of Hollis, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Drew Robinson and wife Kristyne, Barrett Robinson and wife Brianna, of Carlsbad, New Mexico; Dedi Hanagan and husband Hondo of Houston, Texas, Maggie Nell, Bryan Nell and Katie Nell of Lubbock Texas; great-grandchildren, Kinslee Hanagan, Breleigh Hanagan, and Hudson Hanagan, of Houston; Texas Sydney Robinson and Bentley Robinson of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Sybil Francis and husband Gene; sister Wilma Gene Kromer and husband Roland; brother-in-laws Floyd Carrick, Norman Williams and Roland Steward; sister-in-laws Therol Nell; Patricia McIntyre and Mae Ann Steward; numerous nieces and nephews.
Warren lived a happy life, he loved his family and valued his friends friendship greatly. He lived his life based on Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, do it with all your heart.
