Virginia Lee McCarthey was born on May 7, 1938, at Liberty township, Blaine County, to Luther M. Sturgeon and Amy Lowell (Coffey) Sturgeon and passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022, at Integris Baptist Medical Center Northwest in Oklahoma City having reached the age of 84 years, 3 months and 28 days.

Virginia was raised and attended school in Eagle City and Oakwood, graduating from Oakwood High School in 1956.  On April 6, 1958, she married Charles McCarthey in Eagle City and they made their home in western Oklahoma.  Virginia earned her Bachelor Degree in Education from Southwestern State College in 1968.  They lived in Mt. Park, Duncan and Burns Flat before settling in Weatherford in 1975 for over 40 years.

Virginia retired from public school to begin her next adventure in volunteering.  She was a Christian, humanitarian, mother, teacher, friend, and volunteer.  Virginia volunteered with the West Central Oklahoma Literacy Coalition, Et Cetera Shop, Lion's Club and the Pregnancy Care Center.  She was a member of Southwestern Christian Church where she served in many capacities thru the church.  Virginia delivered homebound meals for the Weatherford Nutrition Program and helped at the Weatherford Food Pantry.  She was honored with the Oklahoma Retired Educator's Association State Volunteer of the Year in 2011-2012 and the Amy Yount Award for volunteers in 2012.

In 2018, she moved to Oklahoma City to be near family.  Virginia enjoyed reading and all of the volunteer work that she did.

Virginia is survived by her son, Warren McCarthey of Oklahoma City and her daughter, Anita McCarthey and Richard Hornsby of Oklahoma City.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Wilbur.
