Obituary

Memorial service for Verna Mae (Nowka) Scott, 76 year old, formerly of Hydro, Oklahoma will be held in "The Chapel" of Lockstone Funeral Home in Weatherford, OK on Saturday, April 7 at 11:00 AM with Robert Whitefield officiating. Burial will be held at Hydro Masonic Cemetery in Hydro, Oklahoma under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.

Verna Mae (Nowka) Scott was born October 1, 1941 in Hydro, Oklahoma, the loving daughter of Harry Travis Nowka & Vola Mae (Wellman) Nowka and passed away peacefully on March 11, 2018, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa, California.

She was the middle child of her beloved siblings, Harry E Nowka and Harriet Jane Nowka Tomson. She graduated from Hydro High School in 1959, valedictorian of her graduating class. Verna Mae then went on to acquire a degree in accounting from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1962. She married her high school sweetheart, Samuel L Scott, moving to Spain while he was in the United States Air Force. Upon returning to the United States she moved to Oklahoma City while her husband attended University of Oklahoma. Verna Mae, her young daughter, Samantha, and husband settled down in Sonoma County in 1973. After 19 years of marriage, Sam and Verna parted ways. Verna went on to enjoy a long and successful career in accounting and tax auditing. She was a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), where she worked for the advancing of equality for women through advocacy, education and philanthropy. She was an involved mother and volunteer working as the school librarian at Hidden Valley Elementary and leader & volunteer of the Girl Scouts of Konocti council. Verna enjoyed attending sporting and school events of her granddaughter, had a passion for traveling and enjoyed time visiting with friends and family.

Verna Mae is survived by her daughter, Samantha N Scott and granddaughter, Jesse L Scott, as well as her older brother Harry E Nowka and younger sister Harriet Jane Nowka Tomson. Verna leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was a generous and cherished mother & grandmother, always thinking of her family first.

Verna Mae (Nowka) Scott will be cremated, and laid to rest at the Masonic Cemetery in Hydro, Oklahoma with her parents at the family plot. A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, March 30 th in Santa Rosa, California.
