Memorial services for Vera Jean Phelps, 81 year-old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Weatherford, Oklahoma with Reverend Lynn Brack officiating.

Vera was born May 16, 1931, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Adam Lessie Thomas and Lucille (Henderson) Thomas and passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013. Vera was raised in Tulsa where she graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1949. She attended St. Johns Hospital School of Nursing in Tulsa and graduated in 1952. She married Richard Dale Phelps on November 1, 1952 in Tulsa. The couple lived in Tulsa, Arapaho, Calumet, and Olustee and raised two daughters, Karen and Louann. Vera worked as a nurse in Tulsa, Sands Springs, Clinton, El Reno, Lawton and Olustee, Oklahoma. Vera and Richard also managed the First United Methodist Church Camp near Hinton for 10 years. After they retired the couple moved to Weatherford to be near family in 1994. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, cross-stitch, traveling and collecting clowns.

Vera is survived by two daughters, Karen Phelps Stucker and her husband, Randy and Theresa Louann Phelps Hanks and her husband, Barry, all of Weatherford, Oklahoma. Four grandchildren: Stephanie Stucker Goldman and husband, Joshua of Weatherford; Travis Stucker and his wife, Alicia of Blackcreek, Georgia; Malissa Hanks Grajales and her husband, Danny of Midwest City, Oklahoma and Kristen Hanks and her fianc, Grant Gille of Norman, Oklahoma. Five great-grandchildren: McKenzie and Abbigale Stucker and Julianna, Lillia and Ruby Grajales. Her brothers: Donald Thomas and his wife, Melba of Dallas, Texas and Jerry Thomas and his wife, Jo of Boise, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Richard.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Weatherford and the American Diabetes Association.
