Vera B. Kelln Bullock passed away August 3, 2015 in Weatherford, OK. She was born in Ellsworth, Minnesota, to Anna (Oaks) and David Talmage Hetrick. Her family, including sisters, Thelma (Glenn) and Helen (Wilson), later moved to Rock Rapid, Iowa and then to Neosho, Missouri.
After graduating from Neosho High School in 1943, Vera attended St. Johns Hospital School of Nursing in Joplin, MO and served as a member of the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corp. She completed her training and became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) 1954. She worked as a nursing professional for over fifty years. Her nursing career took her to western Oklahoma where she met Ezra Kelln. They were married on Jan. 14, 1951 in Shattuck, OK. They had three children, Faye Marlene Kelln Henson of Weatherford, OK, Thomas Glenn Kelln of Canute, OK and Steven Joseph Kelln of Aline, OK. She worked for Newman Memorial Hospital and Medical Clinic from 1949 1991 as an OB nurse, surgery scrub and circulating nurse, and as an acute care and private duty care nurse in the hospital and then as Orthopedic office nurse for Dr. Richard Burgtorf and Dr. Max Gingrich. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church (UMC) of Shattuck, OK. where she faithfully served in many roles over the years including Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and choir member. She was an active member of United Methodist Women. She was an avid reader and taught herself to play golf, often playing a whole round of golf with a seven iron and a putter just to enjoy some time out-of-doors.
She married Rev. Robert (Bob) Bullock on February 2, 1991. As the wife of a United Methodist pastor, she moved to Fletcher, Stigler, and finally Poteau, OK while Bob was appointed to serve churches in those areas of the state. While in Fletcher, Vera continued to work as the 11-7 charge nurse for a skilled nursing facility. While in the UMC Lawton District, she became a certified lay speaker. You could find her assisting in many support roles in the churches where Bob preached. As they retired from active ministry, Bob and Vera joined the Poteau United Methodist Church where they volunteered in many of the church ministries. One of her most rewarding experiences was to participate in the Volunteers In Mission (VIM) trips organized by the UMC going to Alaska, Mexico, and Bolivia.
Vera moved to Weatherford, OK. in August 2010 to stay with her daughter Faye Henson and son-in-law Harry. She joined the First United Methodist Church in Weatherford. She enjoyed travelling with Faye whether it was a work related trip, an AAUW meeting, or to visit her family in MO, CA, & NM or to see members of the Henson family as they moved and their families grew up.
Family was important to Vera. She made sure that Faye, Tom and Steve got to meet their grandparents in Missouri, and she kept in close touch with her sisters and their children. She also gained a large family when she married Ezra, so all the Kelln cousins knew Aunt Vera very well. She regularly attended reunions with her Oaks cousins travelling to Illinois, Wisconsin, California, and many other locations throughout the years to keep those relationship active. The Kelln Cousins Reunion in Shattuck kept her in touch with this ever growing part of her family. When Faye married Harry, Vera inherited a family of three boys, Dwayne, Kevin and Chris Henson. She has watched this family grow to seven grandsons and three great grandson and one great granddaughter.
She is survived by daughter, Faye, son Tom Kelln and wife Vonnie (Lalicker), and son Steve Kelln & Oletta Kirk. She has four grandchildren Ashley Kelln Megli and husband Jase of Sweetwater, OK. Amy Kelln of Clinton, OK. , Micheal Kelln of Aline, OK, and Eseree Kelln of Klamath Falls, OR. She has three great-grandchildren, Austin and Alyssa Megli and Kylee Simpson. She is survived by brother-in-law Robert (Bob) L. Wilson, Neosho, MO and her nieces Beverly Glenn and Katha Wilson & husband Larry and her nephews David Glenn and Mike Wilson & wife Tina plus a cousin Ruth Blevins. Special friends include Wilma Coffman, Geneva Busellato, Betty Franks, and Harrys sister, Joyce Henson Dykes. All the Kelln Cousins far and wide know they had a special lady in the Aunt Vera. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Helen and Thelma, brother-in-law Lloyd P. Glenn, her husbands and son-in-law Harry L. Henson, Jr.
Memorial can be made to the First United Methodist Church Circle of Care, Volunteers In Mission, United Methodist Women or the bell choir.
