Truman Eugene
Smith
July 18, 1929 – June 3, 2019
Truman Eugene Smith was born in Ft Cobb, Oklahoma, on July 18, 1929 to Othie and Bettie (Millwee) Smith. Truman attended Hydro Public Schools and graduated at 16 years of age with the Class of 1946.
Truman was very active in the Hydro FFA Chapter. He especially enjoyed showing hogs, primarily Duroc hogs. Truman earned the Jr. Master Farmer's Degree which is equivalent to today's State Farmer Degree. After graduating, he went on to earn the American Farmer Degree as well. He was very proud of having the grand champion Barrow at the Dallas Spring Stock Show. Another great source of pride came from riding a boxcar full of hogs all the way to Austin, Minnesota where he won the Grand Champion prize at the National Barrow show. Truman was an honorary member of the Hydro, Clinton, Colony and the Washita Heights FFA Chapters and was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Future Farmers of America. Farming remained a strong interest in Truman's life. He spent the summers of his youth on wheat harvest and in later years he raised his own cattle and was always willing to help his sons and son-in-law with all of their farming related endeavors.
Truman's interest soon turned to a pretty young girl that he met at a youth rally at the First Baptist Church of Hydro. And, on June 1st, 1950, he married Ila Belle Baskett at her parent's home in Clinton, OK. Truman and Belle made their first home on the family farm south of Hydro.
They owned and operated the Pee Wee Grill in Clinton, and during that time, while Belle primarily ran the café, Truman also farmed, worked at the TB Sanitarium, and owned the Maytag store in town.
Truman always had a great love for his Lord and Savior and was saved at the age of 10. Truman was called to the ministry and surrendered to preach the word of God at Broadway Heights Baptist Church in Clinton on April 6, 1960. He studied at the ABA Seminary in Marlow, OK. In the fall of 1960, Truman was called to pastor his first church in Rocky, OK. The family moved to Rocky and he pastored the Rocky Baptist Church for three years.
In 1963, the family moved to Colony, OK, where Truman pastored the Colony Baptist Church for 39 years. During this time, he also worked for David Tautfest in the appliance repair department. He and Belle operated the Colony Café and also ran a very successful catering business out of the café.
After leaving the church at Colony, he began pastoring at the Pleasant Ridge Church in Geary, OK. He pastored at Geary for 10 years. Finally, Truman and Belle returned to Hydro to once again make their home there. Truman and Belle were members of and enjoyed worshipping at the First Baptist Church of Hydro.
Throughout his lifetime, Truman was a strong servant of the Lord and served him faithfully until God called him home. Truman was also very civic minded and served the communities in which he lived in many ways. During his lifetime, Truman served as a volunteer fireman with the Colony Fire Dept. Upon his retirement from the fire dept, he continued to serve as the Chaplain. He served many terms as the clerk-treasurer on the Colony Town Board. He also served many years on the Washita County fair board and Hydro fair board.
Wherever he went, Truman enjoyed people and took the time to visit and share a joke or a story with those around him. In fact, his daughter-in-law, Janice, would tease him and say he mainly liked to work the PR Dept when they were catering.
In their home hangs a small plaque that says, "Home is where our story begins." In their home, God was the beginning and now Truman is home with his God. We will miss you until we are united again.
Truman was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, one daughter-in-law, Rhonda Smith, and brother-in-law, B.J. Peveler. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ila Belle, of the home in Hydro. Two sons, Wayne and wife Janice of Colony, and Terry and wife Diana of Hinton. One daughter, Debbie and husband David Lasley of Hydro. Also surviving are grandchildren Chad & Brandon Smith, Dusty & Darren Lasley, Crystal Goodman, Alicia & Kyle Patterson and their spouses. Truman is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law Pearl Peveler and a host of other family and friends.
