Steven Lee
Walton
December 16, 1946 – August 27, 2022
Steven Lee Walton was born December 16, 1946 in Corn, OK to Claude and Ollie "Hansen" Walton. Steve finished his long and tiresome race on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at home surrounded by those he treasured most: his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Steve was a Weatherford native who loved this community and his rural roots. He was "never cut out for the city." Steve and his parents moved to their home south of Weatherford in 1948. He graduated from Weatherford High School in 1964. Prior to graduation, he enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard in January of 1964.
In October 1966 (although Steve swears it was before then), Judy and Steve met and began dating almost immediately. Introduced by mutual friend, Bill Firquain, it was a love that quickly grew. On July 21, 1967 Steve and Judy were married at the SWOSU Chapel by Emmanuel Baptist Church pastor Bro. Gerald Lunsford. Steve and Judy made their home in Weatherford, building their first home while Steve continued his work for Sawatzky Construction.
In May 1969, Steve and Judy welcomed their first daughter, Kathy. In 1972, the Walton's began building their homeplace south of town and completed it shortly after their second daughter, Laura, was born in May 1972. In May 1977, Steve and Judy had Melissa who completed their family… or so they thought.
In 1984, Steve went on active duty with the Oklahoma Army National Guard as a Sergeant. Steve had a love for his country and devotion to his service unlike any other. Following in his father's footsteps, Steve served fervently for 26 years and trained many Western Oklahoma young men to be great guardsmen.
In May 1986, Steve and Judy welcomed their first grandchild, Stephanie, followed by Heather, born in August 1989 to daughter, Kathy. Steve and Judy doted on their grandchildren. Stephanie often went to the Oklahoma National Guard Armory calling the beloved SFC Walton "Pappo" to the amusement of his guardsmen.
In 1988, Steve completed active duty and in April 1990, he was honorably discharged and retired from the Oklahoma Army National Guard.
Steve battled many health issues in the coming years. He embraced them with a fighter's spirit and used every second he had to spend quality time creating lifelong memories with Judy and his family. From Colorado trips, time by the pool, and countless hours simply chatting and watching Fox News or the History Channel, his favorite place was with his family.
In October 2002, Steve finally "got his boy." The family excitedly welcomed grandson, Joshua Ryan, born to daughter, Laura. He has considered his "Pappo" to be a great role model and followed in his footsteps by beginning his military career in the United States Army.
Though Steve and Judy loved life with their girls and grandchildren, life really got exciting when they welcomed "the greats" from 2004 – 2020. Their 11 great-grandchildren got the best of the best as they spent countless days and hours doing "Mammo and Pappo School" and driving around doing family and community history lessons, playing in the yard, and just talking about life.
Steve's life was definitely not one of regret. He lived every minute with purpose and intention. He worked hard, loved his country and blessed his family beyond measure as the very best husband, dad, "Pappo" and best friend that ever lived.
Steve is survived by his wife, Judy of their home in Weatherford; daughters, Kathy Robinson and husband Wayne of Piedmont, OK Laura Chapman and husband Rob of Virginia Beach, VA and Melissa Lau and husband Marc of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Stephanie Warner and husband Jim, Heather Williams and husband Kameron, all of Weatherford and Joshua Boothe stationed in California, Paige Weinrich and husband, Tucker of Piedmont and Michael Robinson and wife Kaydee of Oklahoma City; great-grandchildren, Kade, Karissa, Ky, TynsLeigh, Karlee, Hudson, Easton, Cheyenne, Emerson, Paisley, and Charlotte; honorary great-grandchildren Memoree, Jaylynn, Harley, Nova, and Noah as well as countless other children who have known and loved him as "Pappo". Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Ollie Walton; and great-grandbaby Warner.
