Obituary

Shanicey Deshawn (Askins) Elwick was born on December 12, 1973, in Lubbock, Texas and passed away unexpectedly on May 5, 2026, in Yukon, Oklahoma.

Shanicey was raised by her mother, Glynda (Smith) Johnson, and step-father, Gary, in Shawnee and Elk City, Oklahoma. She graduated from Canute High School in 1992. Following high school, she married Mark McCown, and together they welcomed two daughters, Kylee and Morgan, while making their home in Canute.

In 1997, Shanicey moved to Weatherford and attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She had a passion for caring for children, working in childcare and later operating an in-home daycare. In 2005, she married Don Elwick, and together they welcomed twin daughters, Addison and McKinley.

In 2011, Shanicey experienced the heartbreaking loss of her oldest daughter, Kylee, who had Epilepsy and passed away unexpectedly. Through this tragedy, Shanicey became a passionate advocate for Epilepsy awareness and Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Shanicey loved watching movies with her girls, caring for children and babies, and spending time with her family. She touched many families in Weatherford, helping care for their children like her own. She will be remembered for her kind and compassionate heart, and for always helping others - especially those who were struggling or in need. Her daughters were her world. The girls were the true loves of her life, and forever her absolute pride and joy.
