Rose was born July 9, 1925, in Lookeba, Oklahoma to Douglas Dale and Nellie Alma (Leonard) Johnson and passed away Monday, January 5, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Rose was raised on the family farm, east of Lookeba, Oklahoma and attended Lookeba School before moving with the family to Weatherford where she finished high school and attended Southwestern State College. In 1950, after teaching in the Putnam Public School during the fall and winter months and attending college during the summer months, Rose earned her Bachelor of Science in Education degree. She received her Master of Education degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1952. She taught school in Putnam, Oklahoma for 5 years and taught in Weatherford Public Schools for 33 years. Rose retired from teaching in 1987.

On December 24, 1950, Rose married Kenneth M. Smith in Weatherford. They lived in the Putnam area four years before moving to Weatherford in 1954, where they became members of the First United Methodist Church in 1955. Kenneth and Rose were married over 50 years.

Rose enjoyed sewing and she made her first dress at age 14. This was the beginning of many years of sewing for her mother, her sister, relatives, friends and herself. After retiring, she enjoyed making scrapbooks about one-room, country schools. Rose and Kenneth traveled all over Oklahoma looking for the few remaining country schoolhouses. They built their own Little Red Schoolhouse in memory of Roses parents, who were teachers in one-room, country schools, and furnished it with family and school memorabilia. Rose donated the Little Red Schoolhouse to the Heartland of America Museum in Weatherford.
