Roger Oscar
Duncan
April 11, 1942 – May 2, 2025
Roger O. Duncan was born on April 11, 1942, and passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the age of 83 years and 21 days. He was the son of Oscar and Jessie (Singletary) Duncan, longtime resident of Weatherford, OK.
Roger took great pride in his family. His father, Oscar, was a rural mail carrier and an airplane flight instructor. His mother, Jessie, was a school teacher and businesswoman. Together, they founded and taught at the Duncan Flying School on Airport Road, where many students learned to fly, including astronaut Tom P. Stafford.
As Roger's love for aviation grew, his father taught him to fly. He later earned his Private Pilot License with an Instrument Rating. His flying activities included both personal and business travel in his Cessna airplane. His love of flying was only overshadowed by his love of family.
Roger began his education in Weatherford Public Schools and graduated High School in 1960, continuing his education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1964 and later received an Honorary Doctorate. He worked for several years in the field of pharmacy, including at Humpty Drug in Ada, Allen Pharmacy, and United Drug in Weatherford.
Roger enjoyed many hobbies including flying, boating, snow skiing, water skiing, scuba diving, tinkering, visiting the Et Cetra shop, sports, music, and most of all, being a devoted father and grandfather. He had been a member of several organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma Pharmaceutical Association, American Pharmaceutical Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, National Carwash Council, Pi Kappa Alpha, Beta Tau Beta, Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, and served multiple terms on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club over his 40+ years.
He built, owned, and operated car washes for over 45 years on Main Street in Weatherford. He began with a location next to Jerry's Restaurant before building a second across from Edie's Shamrock. Roger took pride in continuously self-upgrading his car wash with cutting-edge technology for its time, such as No-Spot rinse systems and computer-controlled monitoring. He loved his work and especially enjoyed interacting with his customers.
Roger married Ruth Schoelen of Kingfisher, where he lived at the time, later moving to Ada where they had a son, Roger O. Duncan II. Roger Sr moved back to Weatherford in time for his son to start school and continue through high school, as his dad Oscar did. Later, Roger II had two daughters, Sierra Catherine Duncan and Tatum Jessie Duncan, who also continued the tradition of graduating from Weatherford schools.
The girls became a part of their Grand Dad's heart. Known as "PaPa" to the girls, it became the name adopted and loved by many. Some of his most enjoyable moments occurred with his granddaughters, especially the overnight trips boating and camping. When opportunity came for the oldest, Sierra, to live with him, it provided a revisiting of the joys of raising a school-aged child. He of course was well known as the man with the camera shooting activities of his son and granddaughters.
Roger was a devoted Christian, having accepted Jesus Christ many years ago. He was a regular churchgoer, receiving the Word at the First Baptist Church of Weatherford, and was re-baptized alongside his youngest granddaughter, Tatum. Before the death of his father, he was reminded of the scripture: "Confess Jesus is Lord before Man and believe God raised him from the dead and you will be saved" (Roman 10:9). These words his father followed and so did he.
The family takes great comfort in knowing that PaPa was loved by all who knew him and is now reunited with his beloved mother. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 1510 E. Davis Rd., Weatherford, OK 73096.
Roger is survived by his son, Roger O. Duncan II, and his wife, Lisa, of Creede, CO and his granddaughters, Sierra Duncan and Tatum Duncan, of Weatherford, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Jessie Duncan.
