Phyllis Ruth Colpitt Reid was born May 12, 1928, in Collinsville, OK, to T.S. (Ted) Colpitt and Anna Brantley Colpitt. She passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 in Weatherford.
The youngest of four children, Phyllis Ruth (Fuffy) had wonderful memories of her childhood and upbringing in Collinsville. She especially loved school, friends, writing and music and was valedictorian of her Collinsville High School Class of 1946.
Phyllis attended the University of Oklahoma following her sisters and brother, and joined the Alpha Xi Delta sorority where she made lifelong friends. Some of her fondest memories of college were playing her flute with the OU Pride of Oklahoma marching band and finding the love of her life Kenneth Reid. They met October of 1947, decided to marry in November, and said their vows in the Collinsville Community Church Aug. 15, 1948.
After their marriage, they resided in Norman and Phyllis continued her business education studies until the summer of 1949 when their first daughter Terry was born.
When Ken graduated from OU School of Journalism, he accepted his first job with the Claremore Progress newspaper in Claremore, a community they enjoyed for four years, and where their second daughter Ruth Anne was born.
In 1953, with encouragement from his employer, long-time newspaper publisher Ed Livermore, they moved to Pauls Valley where they, and Ed and Maxine Burchfield, published the Daily Democrat with partners Ed Livermore, Claremore, and Wheeler Mayo, Sallisaw. Two sons, David and Phillip, were born in Pauls Valley.
Phyllis used her excellent bookkeeping skills while balancing newspaper accounting with childrearing and community service during the 16 years they lived in Pauls Valley.
She was an active member in the First Presbyterian Church and Chapter AR, P.E.O. She supported her children in many areas as Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, and PTA president, as well as supporting Ken in his Rotary projects, including hosting 16 exchange students over the years.
Their Rotary experiences provided them many opportunities for travel and Phyllis and Ken thoroughly enjoyed seeing their friends around the world. Phyllis had many talents and no fear of new endeavors. She worked to complete her private pilot certification in 1970, which was the beginning of many Cessna adventures.
In 1972, long-time friends Helen and Jimmie Craddock offered to sell the weekly newspaper, The Weatherford News, and Ken and Phyllis made the move to their new community. They immediately began modernizing the newspaper and converting it a daily operation.
Phyllis worked long hours but found time to organize Chapter FG, P.E.O., and later served seven years on the state board of the organization, serving as president in 1997-98. She took an active part in The Federated Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and chairing Christian Womens Fellowship.
She remained active in the Oklahoma Press Association and in the Weatherford Daily News, computerizing the bookkeeping and even writing and providing computer programs for other newspapers. After retirement in 1997, Phyllis enjoyed many more activities including Arkansas trips and seeing her friends in quilting group every Friday. She loved her friends and family.
Phyllis was preceded in death by parents Ted and Anna Colpitt, sisters Mary Alice Cowne and Doris Glenna Schultheiss, brother Charles Colpitt, and grandson Kyle Reid.
She is survived by husband Ken of the home, daughters Terry Magill and husband Bruce of Weatherford; Ruth Anne Colley and husband Joe of Pauls Valley; sons, David Reid and wife, Myra of Cushing, and Phillip Reid and wife Jeanne Ann of Weatherford.
Phyllis especially loved her 12 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren: Chris Reid, son Linden and daughter Abigail, Cushing, OK; Matt Magill, wife Megan and daughters Maggie and Blythe, Tyler, TX; Erin Babcock, husband Stephen and children Callie and Bennett, Pauls Valley, OK; Wes Magill, wife Karen and sons Charlie and Porter, Weatherford; Kory Reid, Cushing; Anna Colley, Murietta, CA; Ben Magill, wife Molly and sons Doss and Booth, Dallas, TX; Reid Colley, Pauls Valley, OK; Hayden Benton and husband Henry, Dallas, TX; Olivia Reid, Norman, OK; and Owen Reid, Rochester, NY.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund of The Federated Church, PO Box 511, Weatherford, Oklahoma, 73096 or to the Oklahoma P.E.O. Projects Fund, Inc., (CSF) Phyllis Colpitt Reid Scholarship, C/O Amy Conner, 8904 South Joplin Ave., Tulsa, Oklahoma 74137.
