Pete passed away Monday, March 15, 2021 in Weatherford, OK.  Born on March 21, 1937 in Mathis, TX to Pedro Huerta and Catarina Lemos, he graduated high school, joined the US Army, and served in Korea.  Upon returning, he received a bachelor's degree from Texas A & I in Kingsville, TX and moved to Hebronville, TX to teach mathematics and to coach the math team.

It was in Hebronville where he met his wife, Rosemary, a home economics teacher, and they wed July 21, 1963.

The couple moved to Austin, TX where Pete received a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacy from the University of Texas.  While in Austin they started a family with their first three children, Rachel, Lillian, and Pete III.

In 1972 the Huerta family moved to Weatherford, OK, where Pete taught in, and chaired, the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Southwestern Oklahoma State University College of Pharmacy.  In Weatherford the family expanded to six with the birth of their fourth child, Carlos J.

Dr. Huerta was part of Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society, as well as Phi Delta Chi Professional Pharmacy Fraternity, and he enjoyed his years serving with Rotary International.  He continued with his love of teaching until his retirement in January, 1994.

A man with a passion for his profession, he continued to work in the field of pharmacy after his retirement from academia, especially working with compounding for inhalation solutions, pain management ointments, and cancer treatment research drugs up until 2019.

The Huertas were active members of St. Eugene Catholic Church, and the couple loved to participate in community activities, especially playing tennis doubles with other families in town.  Also known for his generosity and selflessness, Pete truly knew how to relate to others and to bring people together around his laughter, stories, and a card table.

He is survived by one brother, Joe, his children, Rachel, Lillian, Pete III, and Carlos J., as well as by 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

All are welcome to attend his memorial service on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 3pm at St. Eugene Catholic Church, 704 Bryan Street, Weatherford, OK 73096.
