Mildred Aldine Slagell was born on the home place north of Hydro on her mothers 23rd birthday December 23, 1921. Mildred went to her heavenly home surrounded by family at the Maple Lawn Estates in Hydro, OK the afternoon of March 1, 2013.
She was the first born child to John and Alice Schantz Slagell. She attended rural Hopewell School north of Hydro. After completing the 8th grade she attended Jabbok Bible School for two years. Taking two years off from school she then attended Eastern Mennonite High School located in Virginia, in the fall of 1941 at the age of 19. Upon graduation Mildred served at a Mennonite hospital in La Junta, CO for seven years. Later moving to Hesston, KS where she became a Secretary for the Dean of students at Hesston College. Having a desire to improve her secretarial skills she returned home to attend college at Southwestern Oklahoma State College. After excelling in the one year secretarial training course, Mildred was hired as Secretary to the Dean of Students at Southwestern. When her boss, Dr. W.C. Burris, became the president of Altus Jr. College in 1971, he hired Mildred as his secretary. In 1981 she returned to Southwestern Oklahoma State College as the then, President Campbells, secretary, retiring 4 years later.
Mildred was a lifelong member of Pleasant View Mennonite Church. She accepted Jesus as her Savior during revival meetings lead by D.W. Miller, at the age of 13. She served faithfully in many capacities which included typing and printing the church bulletin beginning in the early 60s for 40 years. She also taught both bible and Sunday School, sang in many womens chorus, she shared her gift of gardening with beautiful floral arrangements for the church. Mildred endured much pain the last 20 years of her life, which she handled as she did all aspects of her life with grace and dignity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Maurice and Walter, one sister Doris, and two sister-in-laws Ella and Ruth. She is survived in death by two brothers Harold Slagell of Corn and Chester Slagell of Weatherford, one sister-in-law Ida Slagell of Hydro, 11 nieces and nephews, 25 great nieces and nephews, and 25 great-great nieces and nephews.
