Maxton Ray
Slagell
August 4, 1935 – January 1, 2020
Funeral service for Maxton Ray Slagell, 84 year-old Hydro, OK resident, will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Pleasant View Mennonite Church with Pastor Jeff Selzer officiating. Services are under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Maxton was born near Hydro, Oklahoma on the family farm on August 4, 1935 to Dan and Jane (Waters) Slagell and passed away on January 1st, 2020 at Maple Lawn Manor in Hydro, Oklahoma.
Maxton was raised north of Hydro and accepted the Lord into his heart in his early teenage years at Pleasant View Mennonite Church. He attended Hopewell School all eight years and Jabbock Bible School through the 11th grade until he was called into 1-W service where he served in 1955 and 1956 at the General Rose Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
On December 21st, 1962, Maxton married Verdella Fahndrich at the Fairview Mennonite Church, Albany, Oregon and they were married for 57 years. The first four months after marriage was spent out in Oregon living in Verdella's aunt's home. Maxton helped Verdella's uncle sheer sheep, worked for a farmer doing all different kinds of jobs, then ended up working for Cooley's Dairy selling milk and whatever else that had to be done.
Maxton and Verdella returned to Oklahoma in 1963 and Maxton helped his three brothers farm—known as the Slagell Brothers—and he helped with Custom Harvesting. He had also worked for the county and the cotton gin. Together, Maxton and Verdella had four children, Jeffrey, Philip, Verla, and Joanna, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Besides the love for his family, Maxton's hobbies were visiting with other people, going fishing, collecting different caps from other places, collecting trains, taking pictures, and playing dominoes. Maxton also enjoyed helping with the audio/visual at church.
Maxton is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Jane Slagell; and one brother, Carl Dean Slagell.
Maxton is survived by his wife, Verdella Slagell; four children, Jeffrey Slagell and wife Lori of Cordell, OK, Philip Slagell and wife Claudia Arnold of Amarillo, TX, Verla Shaffer and husband Martin of Arkansas City, KS, and Joanna Nagelhout and husband Brad of Lebanon, Tennessee; two brothers, Layman Slagell and wife Dorothy and Daniel Slagell and wife Josie; sister, Beulah Switzer; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
