Funeral services for Mary Alice (Cope) Speed, 96 year-old former Eakly, Oklahoma resident, will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Assembly of God in Eakly, Oklahoma with Darren Speed officiating. Burial will follow in Eakly Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.

Mary was born February 2, 1917 in Eakly, OK to Letcher Cope and Elva Bowling Cope. She departed this life April 30, 2013 at the age of 96 in Sapulpa, OK.

Mary married Gordon Speed July 13, 1935 and they were blessed with 77 years of marriage. He preceded her in death in 2012. She was a pastors wife who spent most of her adult life assisting Gordon as they pastored several churches in Oklahoma and Texas.

Among the many things she did, mostly in obscurity, were teaching childrens Sunday school classes, helping with Ladies Missions endeavors, such as getting up at 5:00 a.m. to mix the ingredients for doughnuts, cooking for funerals and church dinners. She also sewed most everything she wore and made garments for her children and grandchildren. Mary could make a tasty meal out of practically nothing, seldom having meat to cook. She crocheted to perfection, and made an afghan for all her children and grandchildren. She also made a full sized lace tablecloth and tatted many beautiful handkerchiefs.

She was very good at fishing and always cleaned all they caught. She canned a lot of vegetables, made homemade kraut, gleaned fields and put a great lot of food in the freezer. She would send the kids home loaded down with frozen fish, peaches, cherries, peanuts, and whatever else she had.

Her flower garden was lovely and she took great pride in it. She also made many quilts, generally always staying busy. She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gordon, two sons Bobby Joe, who died in infancy and Harold, who passed away in 2004, and a grandson Dennis Lynn who died in 1962. Her siblings Dorothy Cope, Stanley Cope, Ivan Cope, Wesley Cope, McKinley Cope, Thelma Cope Aydelotte also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons Arthur Speed and wife Anna, and Dan Speed and wife Nancy, both of Tulsa, and daughter-in-law, Dorenda Speed of Duncan, OK.

Grandchildren include Carla Speed Schellhorn and husband Gary, of Tulsa, OK, Darren Speed and wife Angela, of North Richland Hills. TX. Debbi Speed Waugh and husband Bryan, of Humble, TX. Jolinda Speed Suson and husband Mark of Norman, OK and Dede Speed Lee and husband Rodney of Duncan, OK.

Great grandchildren are Grant Ragsdale, Adam Ragsdale, and Rachel Ragsdale of Tulsa, OK, Morgan Speed Easterly and husband Charles of Grapevine, Texas, and Alex Speed and Ethan Speed of North Richland Hills, TX. Megan Waugh Montieth and husband Mark, of Ardmore, OK, Bryce Waugh and wife Lacy of Piedmont, OK, KayKay Lee Tiffany and husband Andrew of Moore, OK and Kyle Lee and wife Libby of Weatherford, OK. Josh Suson and wife Addison of Norman, OK, and Kirsten Suson of Norman, OK.

She has one great-great granddaughter, Miss Maelynn Montieth, of Ardmore, OK.

She is also survived by her brothers, L. H. Cope and wife Rossi, of Madera, CA, William Edward Cope and wife Syble, of Ridgecrest, CA and a sister, Clara Pearl Jackson of Ivanhoe, CA. She leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A special thanks to the personnel at The Gardens in Sapulpa, OK, and the personnel of Evergreen Hospice.
