Obituary

Mary Ruth "Prater" Morrison was born May 3, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Ed and Ruth Prater.  She passed away on June 12, 2025, in the Oxford Springs Assisted Living Center in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She was surrounded by her loving family.

She was raised in Shreveport where her father worked for Arkla Gas.  Mary graduated from Byrd High School in Shreveport and attended Louisiana Tech, where she majored in Elementary Education, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor's degree.  Upon graduation, she and her roommate, Connie Hogg traveled to Ft. Worth, Texas to teach First Grade in a low-income area. This was to characterize her life of compassion for those less fortunate.

In 1964, she met Jim Morrison, a student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.  They were married in Broadmoor Baptist Church, Shreveport on December 19, 1964.  Upon Jim's graduation from Seminary in 1965, they moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma.  She served faithfully, supporting Jim's ministry as Director of the Baptist Student Union for 37 years.

Mary taught elementary education at Washita Heights Public Schools for one year.  Three babies soon came along and she stayed at home caring for her family and giving encouragement and loving on college students who frequented the home.

Mary came to know Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at the age of nine.  She served faithfully at First Baptist Church, teaching young children in Sunday school for 30+ years.

She was her husband's prayer-mate and supporter in ministry.  She often would find herself cooking for students on a retreat, a mission trip, and in her home.  She loved to share hospitality to international students far from home.  Her legacy will live on in the hearts of college students and those she loved.

Known for her compassion she accepted strangers into her home, providing shelter and food.  On several occasions she gave care for homeless and others recently released from jail with no place to go.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Jim Morrison of the home and three adult children, Michelle and husband Scott Stinson of Weatherford, Melanie and husband Phil Schultz of Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Randy and Kim Morrison of Waco, Texas. She loved her nine adult grandchildren: Hannah, Caleb, and Faith Schultz, Dr. Jay Stinson and his wife Jordan, Riley Stinson and fiancé Bradley Pettijohn, and Luke, Grace, Grant, and Micah Morrison.  Now, there are three great-grandchildren, Sadie, Hally, and a newborn, Jacob, born a day before her passing.  Others in her family included a sister-in-law Donna Prater, of Benton, LA, and sisters-in-law, Barbara Morrison of Chatham, Illinois, Louada Watts of Knollwood, Tex, Lila Brooks of Tulsa, and Phyllis and husband Mike Marie of Cibola, Texas, plus numeral nephews, nieces and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents, stillborn daughter, Cherly Manom Morrison and brother Perry Prater.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Good Shephard Hospice and Dr. Marshall Huser, as well as the caregivers of Oxford Spring Assisted Living Center and Corn Heritage Village.

Those who wish to make contributions in lieu of flowers can do so:  Scott Hume, Baptist Collegiate Ministries at SWOSU, 719 Bradley, Weatherford, OK 73096.
