Mary Anne
Couch
March 1, 1946 – October 9, 2022
Mary Anne (Vogt) Couch was born on March 1, 1946, in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Herbert Hershel and Ella Helen (Thiessen) Vogt. She passed away on October 9, 2022, at Homestead Living Center in Weatherford at the age of 76 years, 7 months, 8 days. She was surrounded by her daughters and sons-in-law.
Mary Anne attended Corn Public Schools and graduated in 1964. While in school, she met her most handsome bus driver and as they say, the rest is history. J.B. and Mary Anne were married on March 20, 1964, in Corn. They made their home in Corn and lived there their entire life until Mary Anne moved to Weatherwood Living Center in Weatherford in January 2017.
In July 1966, Jena Carole entered the world. December 1970, Julie Anne came along and completed their family. Mary Anne was so proud of her family. When the grandkids entered the world, you could see the joy and excitement written all over her face. Then great-grandchildren came along and there was joy like no other. Her family was the light of her life.
Mary Anne worked at Tena's Café in Corn while attending college. She received her Secretarial Certificate from Southwestern State College. Shortly after receiving her certificate, she began working in the superintendent's office for Corn Public School in December 1965. When the school consolidated with Colony Public School and became Washita Heights Public School in 1968, she continued to work for the school. Mary Anne was at Washita Heights when the school began and stayed there until the school closed its door in 2010. She retired knowing that she could never love a job as much as she loved HER school and HER job. Mary Anne was known by many as the Heart of Washita Heights. Very few people can say that they stayed at the same job for 45 years!
Mary Anne took great pride in volunteer work at the Et Cetera Shop. She worked for many years alongside her mother, father, sister and sister-in-law. This work was another way to serve her community and share her faith.
Mary Anne was a woman of strong faith. She recorded in her bible that she received Christ as her Savior on April 10, 1954, in Colony, OK. Everyone that knew her knew immediately that God was her Savior. Her mission in life was to spread her faith through music. Mary Anne played the piano for more weddings, funerals, graduations, and school programs that anyone could keep count of. She played the piano and organ for Calvary Baptist Church for 54 years before having to stop in 2019. Mary Anne was instrumental, along with her best friend Norma Powers, in beginning Discovery Club for the kids at the church. She loved spreading the word of God to the youth.
Mary Anne is survived by her daughters, Jena Allen and husband, Brian, of Oklahoma City, and Julie Chisum and husband, Tyler, of Hydro; four grandchildren, Brittany Joyce and husband Robby, Bryce Allen, Derek Chisum and wife Paxton, and Toby Chisum; six great-grandchildren, Rylan, Raylee, Raygan, and Ramsey Joyce, Wrenlee and Oakley Chisum; one sister, Karol Dillard and husband, Charles; one brother-in-law, Bill Couch; one sister-in-law, Cheryl Vogt; and her very special nieces and nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B., her parents, her brother Richard Vogt, one brother-in-law, Willard Couch, and two sisters-in-law, Ev Couch and Pam Couch.
In lieu of flowers, please help us memorialize our dear mom with a bench and pergola at Homestead Memory Care of Weatherford. Donations can be made to the Bank of Hydro for the Mary Anne Couch Memorial fund.
