Obituary

January 19, 2018 brought to a close a life filled with love for family and friends, good books, cute shoes, helping people, being a Grandma and the love for adventure for Marilyn Mercer Thigpen.

She was born September 11, 1953 to Robert and Bonnie (Hill) Mercer in Woodward, Oklahoma, the second of three children. Marilyn was a graduate of Vici High School and completed her Masters Degree in Counseling at SWOSU.

In 1983, while working in Oklahoma City she met and married John (Skip) Thigpen. After moving around a bit, they settled in Alexandria, Louisiana. They had four children, Chance, Shane, Shakira and Cole who became her life and focus. When Cole was diagnosed with cancer she lovingly devoted a year and a half to his treatment and care until his passing.

In 1999 Marilyn moved to Weatherford to be closer to family, she was employed at SWOSU and later accepted employment at Red Rock Behavioral Heath Services in Clinton, Oklahoma, where she was beloved by both colleagues and clients.

She was honored to become a grandmother and loved and adored her grandkids, and her absolute intent was to spoil them at every opportunity.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Cole Tanner Thigpen. She is survived by her husband Skip of Alexandria, LA, son Chance, of New Orleans, LA, daughter, Shakira Thigpen, Brenden Royce and granddaughter Chanel of Weatherford. And son Shane and wife Meredith, grandchildren Tripp, Journey and River of Weatherford. Brother Mark Mercer and wife Dewanna of Checotah, nieces Chastea Butler and husband Anthony of Edmond, Mckayla Mercer and nephew Matt Mercer and great nieces Layken and Lundyn of Weatherford. One sister Marsha Carman and husband Robert, nephew Branden Carman and wife Rebecca of Weatherford, and nieces Trinity and Christen Carman of Edmond, and two great nieces, Mackina Dobrinski and Megan Carman, along with numerous other loving family and fiends.

Services for Marilyn are scheduled for Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Church of Christ in Weatherford, OK.  Burial will be held at a later date in Alexandria Memorial Gardens in Woodworth, Louisiana.
