Funeral services for Leslie Robert Les Dawson, 62 year-old Hinton, Oklahoma resident, will be held Friday, July 19, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. in the Federated Church with Charlie Sappington and Max Pyron officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford, Oklahoma, under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Les was born January 28, 1951 in Weatherford, Oklahoma to William Robert and LaVerna Louise (True) Dawson and went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, July 15, 2013 at his home in Hinton, Oklahoma surrounded by his family. He is now joyously singing in Gods heavenly choir. Les was raised and attended school in Weatherford, Oklahoma and graduated from Weatherford High School in 1969. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Southwestern State College. On December 19, 1970, Les married Donnie Hammond in Spencer, Oklahoma and made their home in Weatherford. They moved to El Dorado, Kansas where he taught 5th grade; was P.E. teacher and coach in Marlow Public Schools. Les followed his grandfathers and fathers footsteps and went in to banking at State National Bank/BancFirst in Marlow, First National Bank of Chickasha in the Rush Springs Branch, and First National Bank of Weatherford in the Hinton Branch. He was an avid golfer; caring teacher and coach of football, basketball, and golf; the voice of the Marlow Outlaw High School basketball team on the radio; and was an active member of the Lions Club for 31 years. Les helped to organize many festivals and community celebrations including the Marlows 4th of July Celebrations entertainment, Rush Springs Watermelon Festival entertainment, and entertainment at the Hinton Fair. He was the Goober Guru of the Marlow Peanut Festival; served as officers and on committees of the Chamber of Commerce for Marlow, Rush Springs, and Hinton; and served as master of ceremonies for hosts of parades in Marlow and Duncan. Les greatest love was his children and grandchildren. He spent many hours as a square dance caller and dancer; he loved singing and playing his guitar; and talking Fwerbersher with his grandsons. Les is survived by his wife of 42 years, Donnie Dawson of their home in Hinton, Oklahoma; his son, Michael Shane Dawson and wife, Shana and their son, Ethan of Edmond, Oklahoma; his daughter, Melani DAnne Dawson-Lear and husband, Coates and their sons, Dawson and Porter of Denver, Colorado; two sisters, Carol Lynn Moses and husband, Robert of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Vicki Louise Camp and husband, Joe of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two aunts, Merna Hawkins and husband, Alva of Coolidge, Arizona and Marilyn Simpson and husband, Jim of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
