Funeral services for Leonard O. Peters, 92 year old Hydro, Oklahoma, resident, will be Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at 10:30 A. M. at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church, northwest of Hydro, Oklahoma, with Darwin Hartman officiating. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Mennonite Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Leonard was born April 10, 1919, in Henderson, Nebraska to Jacob C. and Anna (Ott) Peters and passed away Friday, March 2, 2012, at his home in Hydro, Oklahoma. Leonard was raised and attended school in Henderson, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school in 1938. He attended a year of college at York College in York, Nebraska. Leonard married Jeanette Van Voorst on January 1, 1946, in Decatur, Michigan. They later moved to Newton, Kansas, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Education from Bethel College. After graduation he taught school in Stapleton, Nebraska. They moved to Decatur, Michigan, and he finished his Masters Degree at Western Michigan University. In 1965, they moved to Hesston, Kansas, where they lived until 2005. At that time they moved to North Newton, Kansas, and lived there until 2010, at which time they moved to Hydro, Oklahoma, to be near their family. Leonard was a 42 year Charter Member of the Kansas Mennonite Mens Chorus. He enjoyed music, golf, reading, sports, and having coffee with his friends. Memorials may be made to the Mennonite Disaster Relief Fund or to the Kansas Mennonite Mens Chorus.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanette Peters, of their home in Hydro, Oklahoma; two sons: Kenn Peters and wife, Cyndy Lester of Lawrence, Kansas, Don Peters and wife, June of Hesston, Kansas; five daughters: Beverly Long and husband, Larry of Hydro, Oklahoma, Janice Lichti of Derby, Kansas, Meribeth Slagell and husband, Virgil of Hydro, Oklahoma, Karen Entin and husband, Eric of Hydro, Oklahoma, and Dori Slagell and husband, Stephen of Weatherford, Oklahoma; two sisters, Kathryn Couch of York, Nebraska, and Justina Smith and husband, Dale of Wichita, Kansas; eighteen grandchildren and spouses; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Little Abe and Henry; and one sister, Maria.
