Obituary

Kenneth Dewayne Slagell, 78, of Weatherford, OK, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2024, in his home after a long battle with a rare progressive brain disease (PSP).  Born in Clinton, OK on September 29, 1946, to Elsie (Miller) and Elmer Slagell, he was reared on the family farm northeast of Hydro, OK where his lifelong work ethic and love of the land was instilled in him.  Ken's early Christian life began at Pleasant View Mennonite Church where he was baptized.  He was a lifelong follower of Christ and was a member of the Weatherford Church of Christ.  Ken attended public school in Hydro and graduated in 1964.   He attended Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA graduating with a B.S. degree in Mathematics.  Upon graduation and marriage, he served in the mission field teaching math in Otukpo, Nigeria for three years.  After returning to Virginia, Ken taught math at Page County High School and Eastern Mennonite School.  Ken always wanted to learn how to fly airplanes and after nine years, he left teaching to be a part of K&K Aircraft Inc. (Dynamic aviation) where he spent the next 27 years.   Ken traveled around the world and had many great adventures.  However, Ken's greatest desire in life was to farm, so he left the aviation industry, bought the family farm and moved back to Oklahoma where he farmed for the next 20 years until his health forced him to retire.  He was passionate about farming, and he especially enjoyed working in his canyon and making it a place for others to enjoy as well.  He loved sharing his canyon and had several concerts, church services and also baptisms in the creek.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time sitting around the campfire with family and friends.  Ken and Janet built a cabin in the canyon and made many wonderful memories spending time there.

Several years ago, Ken made the commitment to donate his body to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to be used for medical research.  This decision demonstrates his desire to help others, even after his passing.

Ken is survived by his wife, Janet whom he married in 2015, his son, Joseph Slagell and wife, Liz; daughter, Renita Michael and husband, Roger; siblings, Warren Slagell and wife, Lola, Connie Holmberg and husband, Skip; and Michael Slagell and wife, Faith; brother-in-law, Richard Kauffman; three grandchildren, Cameron Slagell, Luke Slagell and Savannah Harman as well as many nieces and nephews.  Also, his bonus family; Tom Grabeal and wife, Shelby and children, Tristan and Trinity; Tamara Grabeal and husband, Brand Hartsell and children, Braden and Lauren.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Kauffman and his parents.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  2 Timothy 4:7
