Kenneth Eugene
Roof
January 3, 2015
Funeral services for Kenneth Eugene Roof, 89 year-old Thomas, Oklahoma resident, will be held Thursday, January 8, 2015, 11:00 A.M. at the Thomas High School Auditorium with David Beck and Jason Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Valley Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home of Thomas.
Kenneth was born on January 23, 1925 to John Thomas and Cora (Loepp) Roof and passed away on January 3, 2015 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was raised east of Thomas, attending Jefferson Rural School. He attended Thomas High School and graduated with the class of 1943. While at Thomas High, he was an All-State running back, rushing for more than 1,100 yards his senior season. Kenneth was also the first Oklahoma high school athlete to win four individual events at the state track meet. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served two years in Texas.
After service he began attending Oklahoma A&M University (OSU), graduating in 1950 as an All-American halfback. In 1947, he set the school record for yards per carry (7.56) for a single season. That record stood until it was broken by Barry Sanders. It was while he was at Oklahoma A&M that he met and married the love of his life, Betty Faye Sapp. They made their home in Stillwater, Oklahoma for two years before moving back to Thomas.
Kenneth had an opportunity to play for the Chicago Bears, but chose to begin teaching at Thomas Public Schools and assisting coach Joe Ross in coaching the Thomas Terrier football team. Together they had an amazing coaching run in the 1950s, where the Terriers won five state titles. In his 19 years as an Oklahoma Hall of Fame head coach, the Terriers went undefeated for six seasons, and were district champions each year. In the summers, Kenneth spent his time working the wheat harvest. After 37 years of teaching and coaching, he retired in 1987. Kenneth was a member of the First Christian Church of Thomas, where he served as a Deacon. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, playing dominoes with friends, farming, and ranching. Kenneth was also a member of the Thomas Masonic Lodge #265 for 63 years. Memorials may be made in memory of Kenneth Roof to the First National Bank of Thomas for State Championship rings.
Kenneth is survived by two sons, Woody Roof and his wife Lynn of Weatherford; and Lucky Roof and his wife Brandee of Thomas; two daughters, Debby Bradt and her husband Travis of Watonga; and Kimmy Roof of Thomas; brother, Edward and his wife Caroline of Thomas; sister-in-law, Sunny Jo Roof of Thomas; brother, Donald Roof of Thomas; and a sister-in-law, Charlene Roof of Thomas.
