Josie (Buller) Slagell was born September 14, 1933, at home, near Waka, TX to David Edward and Sarah (Kroeker) Buller and passed away Monday, August 22, 2022, at Homestead of Weatherford in Weatherford, OK at the age of 88.
At the age of 10, her family moved to Cleo Springs, OK where she attended school until her high school days and then transferred to Oklahoma Bible Academy until graduation. She moved to Dinuba, CA to help her brother, Vernon, and his wife who were expecting a baby. She also worked at Kings View Home in Reedley, CA as a nurse aid, assisting physicians and doing laundry. While working at Kings View, she met Daniel Slagell, who was on assignment there for voluntary service. He saw Josie walk by a door pushing a laundry cart one day and told the guys "I like the looks of her." Josie taught Daniel how to do the laundry, and that's where their life together began. On March 18, 1955, they married and made their home north of Hydro. As a teenager, Daniel had carved in sand rock, in a local canyon, "For sale, one Daniel Slagell. After their marriage, he finished it with "Sold to Josie Buller. They had 5 children, Eugene, Dwight, Kathy, Dwayne, and Byron. While raising their children, Josie had various jobs helping milk cows, chopping cotton, hanging wallpaper, and cooking at the school. After her children were gone from home, she served as dietary manager at Maple Lawn Manor for many years. They attended Pleasant View Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Josie enjoyed hosting Sunday meals, holidays, and opening her home to the youth group. She was known in the community for her homemade cinnamon rolls and bread. Together with Daniel, they spent several weeks each summer camping with their children. As a couple, they enjoyed traveling, with two of their favorite trips being to Alaska and a train trip to Canada and Virginia. In June of 2022, she moved to Homestead of Weatherford where she enjoyed the company of others and touching lives through conversation. She was loved and adored by many including her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Josie is survived by four sons; Eugene Slagell and wife, Merri Kraemer, of Ayr, Ontario, Canada, Dwight Slagell and wife, Joanna, of Hydro, OK, Dwayne Slagell and wife, Kerry, of Hydro, OK, Byron Slagell and wife, Catherine, of Grottoes, VA; one daughter, Kathy Thomas and husband, Devert of Hydro, OK; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruby Regier, of Cleo Springs, OK; sisters-in-law, Nelda Buller Dorothy Slagell and Roberta Slagell She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Daniel Slagell; three brothers, Vernon, Eldo, Ralph; six sisters, Ida, Evelyn, Albua May, Francis, Emily, Clarine and two sisters in infancy/toddlerhood, Alvina and Delores.
Memorials may be made to Pleasant View Mennonite church ~Kitchen fund or to Homestead of Weatherford ~Activity fund.
