Obituary

John Patrick Overton, Jr. was born on November 2, 1941, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to John Patrick Overton, Sr. and Dorothy Grace (Dunlap) Overton. He grew up in Georgia, where he developed a lifelong love for sports. In high school, he excelled in basketball, baseball, track, and tennis, graduating from Forest Park High School in 1959.

Following graduation, Pat joined the United States Air Force, serving from 1959 to 1963 in the Strategic Air Command. While stationed at Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base in Oklahoma, he met the love of his life, Judith Carol Lanier, at a WKY Radio Teen Hop. They were married on November 23, 1960, at First Baptist Church in Weatherford, Oklahoma.

After his military service, Pat and Judy moved to Georgia, where he began working for Delta Airlines. However, Judy missed being close to family, so they returned to Oklahoma. After returning to Oklahoma, Pat worked for Aero Commander in Oklahoma City. Later the couple made Weatherford their home. Together, they raised three sons—Pat, Brad, and Greg—in a home filled with love, faith, and sports.

In 1969, Pat began managing Weatherford Airport and opened an aircraft maintenance shop, which he operated for 10 years. He earned his pilot's license and became a flight instructor, later transitioning into charter flying. He flew for small businesses such as Wheeler Chevrolet and Nixon Oil Company, as well as for friends and family. Pat was always willing to lend his skills—often flying youth from Falls Creek Camp back home for baseball playoffs, ensuring they missed as little camp time as possible. As a family they took many trips by private plane to visit family in Georgia and vacation in the western United States and Canada.

He and Judy were longtime, active members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Weatherford, where Pat taught Sunday School and worked alongside Judy in the College and Career ministry for many years. They led youth ski trips to Colorado and invested deeply in the lives of young people.

A passionate sports fan, Pat coached his sons' baseball teams and rarely missed a game or event involving his children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy, and he was always there cheering from the stands or the sidelines. As an avid golfer, he developed many great friendships through thousands of rounds of golf.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, J.P. and Grace Overton, and his brothers, Mark Overton and Don Overton.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Judy Lanier Overton; his sons Pat and wife Lavon Overton of Weatherford, Brad and wife Chrystal Overton of Weatherford, and Greg and wife Cindy Overton of Thomas; grandchildren Jessica and husband Matt Fleming of Piedmont, Colby and wife Joanna Overton of Choctaw, Dillon and wife Morgan Overton of Norman, Dusty and wife Catie Overton of Weatherford, Tyler and wife Jaclyn Overton of Allen, TX, Cassi Overton of Allen, TX, Scott and wife Claude Overton of Weatherford, and Christa Overton of Houston, TX.

He is also survived by his brother Doug and wife Lanette Overton of Wedowee, AL; sisters Kathy Fullilove of Winder, GA and Pam and husband John Gilreath of Lawrenceville, GA; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pat was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, proud great-grandfather, and loyal friend. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church.
