Obituary

John Jacob Flaming "Jay" of Weatherford, Oklahoma passed away and entered into his heavenly home, surrounded by his family, on January 21, 2026. He was born on April 21, 1932, in a small town outside of Perryton, Texas to Peter J. and Helen (Wiebe) Flaming. When he was five years old, he moved from Perryton, Texas to Corn, Oklahoma where he spent his childhood. He married the love of his life, Virginia Biles on July 4, 1952, and they made their home in Borger, Texas. In 1957, Jay began his career with Texaco and moved all around the country with his family. He retired after twenty years and moved to Weatherford, OK, where he and Virginia owned and operated the Shoe Box for eleven years. He and Virginia built their own home in 1980, where they have lived since. After selling the Shoe Box, he worked in the water department at the City of Weatherford until his retirement in 1999. He never truly retired though, as he remained active working with local farmers for more than twenty years.

Jay is remembered for his love of the Lord, his family, and his dedication to the church. His faith shaped every part of his life. At First Baptist Church in Weatherford, he was director of Royal Ambassadors, drove the bus, chaired the Building and Grounds Committee, and he and Virginia faithfully served and directed the food service ministry until their retirement in 2023. He loved the Lord and ended every day sitting in his chair reading his Bible. Jay loved his family deeply, with a special tenderness for children, delighting in their laughter and guiding them with patience, kindness, and wisdom. He never smiled brighter than when he was rocking a baby in his lap. His quiet, constant faith and unwavering love and devotion to his wife and family leave a lasting legacy of faith in the hearts of all who were honored to know him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one son John Jay Flaming, one great grandson Shepherd Leroy Dalton, eight siblings, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Delvin and Rhea Schutes.

Jay is survived by his wife of 73 years, Virginia Flaming, his daughter Sydney Flaming Porter, his grandchildren John Jeremy Flaming (Anna), Angela Baugher (Matt), Lindsey Dalton (Jeff), Daniel Porter (Morgan), and Sydney Elizabeth Porter, ten great grandchildren, two brothers Harvey Flaming (Doris) and Jerry Flaming and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
