Obituary

John Marshall Huser, Jr., 86, of Weatherford OK, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 6th, in his home of 50 years in Weatherford, Oklahoma. John was born on September 20, 1933, in Wewoka, Oklahoma, to Marshall and Donnell Huser. After graduating from Wewoka High School, he attended OU and graduated OU College of Medicine in 1958. He served as president of the OU College of Medicine's senior class and achieved an extensive list of accomplishments throughout his medical career.

John married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Stewart, on June 4th, 1955, and they had four children and built a loving and fun Christian family. Family and his medical practice were his priority, as was serving God by helping people. John and Shirley have lived and been involved in the Weatherford community since they arrived in 1965.

Throughout his 58-year career in medicine, John delivered more than 2,400 babies and was endeared to his patients by his caring ways. He was instrumental in recruiting physicians to Weatherford. John was awarded Weatherford Rotary Club's "Outstanding Citizen Award," and the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce presented him with its Hall of Fame Award. He was chosen Physician of the Year in Private Practice by the OU Medical Alumni Association in 1994.

He served as a member of the OU College of Medicine admissions board and volunteered as a clinical instructor for OU's Family Residency program. He served as President of the OU College of Medicine Alumni Association. He pioneered bringing laparoscopic surgery and epidural anesthesia to western Oklahoma.

John has been a member of the Weatherford Church of Christ for 54 years and has served as a church elder for the past 43 years. He has been a volunteer doctor at the Agape Medical Clinic.

The activities he enjoyed were enjoyed by his family also. Teaching himself how to play tennis in high school, John was an avid and excellent tennis player for many years. His fondness for the sport influenced each of their four children, as well as Shirley, to learn to play tennis. He and Shirley enjoyed playing doubles together with friends. Spring Breaks were spent snow skiing and each summer a family vacation. He enjoyed many years of quail hunting and fishing. Later in life, John took up golf and enjoyed this sport with close friends as well as family.

Upon retirement at age 72 in 2005, he chaired the campaign to build a new hospital facility; working diligently to raise funds for the Weatherford Regional Hospital. During retirement, John and Shirley enjoyed many travels abroad as well as in the U.S.

John Huser is survived by: his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley; four children—Becky Woodward, and husband, Paul, of Enid; J. Huser, and wife Gina, of Weatherford; Larae Barton, and husband, Rick, of Garland, Texas; Mendy Dunham, and husband, Rory, of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren—Cody (Katie) Woodward, Cassie (Michael) Taylor, Marshall (Whitnie) Huser, Jace Huser, Luke Barton, Jared Barton, and Eli, Rowan, and Tatum Dunham—as well as six great grandchildren; the grafted-in family of Bill and Angie Pounds and their three sons—Justin, Michael, and Brandon; his sister, Sue Carter, of Dallas, Texas; his brother, Bill, and his wife, Carol, of Wewoka; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Paul.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Patti Springer, who has tirelessly cared for both Dad and Mom, to Aly Lankford, and to the nurses of Hospice. We also remember with gratitude Dr. Aaron and the staff at Weatherford Regional Hospital who took outstanding care of Dad.
