Obituary

James Edward "Ed" Page was born September 2, 1925, to John Burton & Delia Muriel (Jones) Page on his mother's home place in a log cabin in Leedey, Oklahoma. He entered into heavenly rest before dawn on March 22, 2018, at the age of 92 years, 6 months, and 20 days.

Ed's ninety-two and a half years were full of adventures, but as he put it, "not that [my life] was anything special or I did anything to brag about."

When his mother married John Eugene Patterson on July 7, 1928, the young family moved to Olney, Texas, where they farmed wheat, cotton, corn and maize. While in Texas, John and Muriel expanded their family and Ed gained four siblings. In 1933, the entire family moved back to Leedey, Oklahoma. All seven of them lived in a one-room house, no bigger than 16x20. Ed called that "togetherness." Three more siblings were born in Oklahoma and Ed was the oldest of the eight.

In Leedey, the family continued to farm family land. Ed recalled in detail the beginnings of the Dust Bowl. "During this time (1934/35) is when the dust bowl day started and at their worst. I can very well remember the Sunday afternoon that was referred to later as the 'Dark Sunday.' I mean to say you had to burn the lamps, it was so dark. You also could hardly breathe because the air was so full of dust." Despite the adverse conditions, the family persevered on and continued to farm, harvesting fairly good crops. The farming operation expanded even more in the late 1930s and Ed was sent into a field with a four horse team. He was 11 years old.

Ed attended school in Texas and Oklahoma, receiving his diploma from Leedey High School in 2002. He was a senior in high school in 1943, when he was drafted into the service. He left Leedey, Oklahoma, took a train west across the United States and ended up in Camp Callen in California, on Christmas Eve 1943, for basic training. He was assigned to the Battery B 54 Batallion Army Anti Aircraft division and finally Battery B 865 AW BW. He was stationed in Hawaii and Siapan, in the Marianas Island. He was discharged from the service on March 18, 1946. In 2002, Ed received his long-overdue and well earned high school diploma from Leedey High School.

Following his service in WWII, Ed returned to western Oklahoma and started farming in the Weatherford area. He met and married Mary Francis Maynard on August 7, 1948. At that time, he joined Burl Taylor's Auto Repair Shop on East Main in Weatherford. In 1954, he purchased the business and operated Page Garage for more than 40 years. Ed had fond memories of all of his customers and frequently retold stories of getting up in the middle of the night to help stranded motorists.

In addition to his business, Ed was very involved in gardening, woodworking, and the Weatherford FFA. His son and daughter were active in the agriculture classes. He raised registered Hampshire pigs and drove across the country buying and selling show pigs. Ed and his family spent countless summers camping and fishing at Ft. Cobb Lake. In their retirement, Ed and Mary were regular attendees at bluegrass festivals in Hugo, OK, McAlester, OK, Waldron, Arkansas and countless others around the midwest. In 2012, Ed participated in the Honor Flight program and traveled to Washington DC with other WWII veterans for a personal tour of the monuments and memorials.

In letters Ed left for his family about his early life, he called his birth "the big event." Ed's ability to recall names, dates, places, and other facts that everyone else had long forgotten was a source of amusement among the family, which is why no one was surprised at the detailed letter he wrote about his early life and military service, which aided family in writing his obituary.

Ed is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary; daughter Darla Lowry and husband Tim; son David Page and his children; Sisters Lillian Levetta "Sis" Thomas, Margaret Vassoll, and Leona Fay "Cookie" Ivey;  Grandaughters Kathryn Taylor and husband Keenen, and Meredith Harden and husband Garet; his newest prides, great-grandsons Kaseten Jedidiah James Taylor and Colt Hamilton Harden; and numerous  other nieces, nephews, and beloved friends in the Weatherford community. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Nancy Patterson Rogers Thomas, Jerry Patterson, Don Patterson, and Johnny Patterson. Memorials may be made in Ed's name to the Tipton Boys Home or Westview Boys Home, in lieu of flowers.
