Funeral: 2:00 PM Saturday, August 23rd, 2014Church of Christ

Funeral services for Jacqueline Jackie Vee (Thomas) Long, 84 year-old Hydro, Oklahoma resident, will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014, 2:00 P.M. at the Church of Christ in Hydro with Landon Rowell officiating. Burial will follow in Hydro Masonic Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.

Jackie was born on January 7, 1930 to Odes Joshua (Cody) Thomas and Roxy Myrtle (Hume) Thomas in Hydro, Oklahoma and passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Maple Lawn Estates in Hydro.

Jackie graduated from Hydro High School in 1948. One of her most treasured accomplishments was winning the State Basketball Tournament along with her teammates in 1948, and later being honored with the Jim Thorpe Award in 1974 for outstanding female athlete. She earned her degree in Pharmacy from Southwestern State College. While attending college she was the Southwestern Football Queen her senior year. On June 6, 1951, she married Verlin Leslie Long. Shortly after they were married Verlin was stationed in Korea as a Sergeant in the United States Army. While Verlin was serving in Korea, Jackie moved to Oklahoma City and worked at Mercy Hospital where she taught Pharmacology to the student nurses. After Verlin returned from the service they made their home in Hydro and resided there the rest of their lives. In 1962, Verlin and Jackie purchased the Hydro Dry Goods from her parents. They later expanded the business into a department store, which they ran until December 23, 1989, when they sold the store to their special friend Susan Kimble. Jackie was an active member of the Hydro Church of Christ. She was always community minded. Verlin and Jackie were class parents for several Senior classes at Hydro. Because of their love of the younger generation, Verlin and Jackie and her sister and brother-in-law, Bob and Rita Russell ran the Hydro movie theater and the Hydro Skating rink in the 1950s and 1960s. This 4-some was responsible for the Bingo Stand at the Hydro Free Fair for numerous years. Jackie and Rita were 4-H leaders for the Hydro School. Jackie was very active in the Hydro Garden Club. She helped start the Jr. Garden Club where they taught gardening to the Hydro 6th Graders.

Jackie is survived by her three daughters, the twins, Glenda Long and her husband, Joe, Brenda Sweeney and her husband, Stan, and Tammy Bright and her husband, Curt, who have all made their homes and work in Hydro, Oklahoma: Four Grandchildren, Brooke Bright, Crystal Hamons, Kemper Sweeney, and Trevor Bright: three Great Grandchildren, Mason, Reno and Cora: one Sister, Rita Russell of Hydro, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents: husband: and one sister, Shirley.

The family has asked that donations be made to the Hydro First Responders in lieu of flowers.
