Obituary

Irene enjoyed 90 years on this earth and will now enjoy her permanent home in Heaven. She was the greatest Mom to Brian Adler and Cheryl Adler Nix, and both said they were fortunate to have her in their lives for so many years. She passed on September 20, 2022 having reached the age of 90 years, 4 months and 17 days.

Irene was strong-willed (and could be stubborn) and always liked to have fun. She never knew a stranger and always liked striking up conversations with anybody around. She loved her family and enjoyed a reunion. 'Mema' always planned festive holiday meals and enjoyed decorating her home for the family.

Irene (Sauer) Adler was born May 3, 1932, to Adam and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sauer. She grew up on the family farm southwest of Weatherford and was the baby of nine siblings and the only remaining sibling of the family. Irene graduated in 1950 from Weatherford High School. She worked at Owl Photo Company for 37 years.

She married LeRoy Adler on May 28, 1955, in Weatherford. During their marriage, they had three children—Gary, Brian and Cheryl. Gary was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away in August, 1961, at the age of four years and 10 months. LeRoy was diagnosed with cancer in November, 1984, and passed away in January, 1985, at the age of 59.

Irene was a life-long member of Zion Church (now known as CrossPointe Church) and a member of the 1947 Confirmation Class. After retiring from Owl Photo, she met Linda Sullivan Olson, who was hired as the first director of the new Pioneer Senior Citizen Center in Weatherford. Irene helped Linda as a volunteer and then helped the center's second director—Callie Waldrop. Both were special friends. Irene served as a volunteer at the Pioneer Center for 25 years before declining health in 2016 forced her to stop serving. She enjoyed seeing and visiting with many of the folks who frequented the center.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, one son and long-time companion Harvey Black. She is survived by son Brian Adler, Weatherford; daughter Cheryl Nix and her husband, Von Nix, of Edmond; two grandchildren and their spouses: Trevon and Jorden Nix of Edmond and Jordan and Chris Ganz of Dallas (TX); two great-grandchildren—Lucy Nix and Adler Nix; sister-in-laws Faye Adler, Wichita (KS),; Mildred Wood, Sayre; Joan Balkcom and husband Don, Albuquerque (NM); as well as numerous nieces/nephews.

The family is so appreciative of the many friends and caregivers who assisted Irene, especially during the last six plus years of her life.

Memorials can be made to the Weatherford Pioneer Center Meals on Wheels, City Hall, 522 W. Rainey, Weatherford OK.
