Iola Fae (Shreck) Miller was born Christmas Eve, December 24, 1927, in a small farm house six miles north of Thomas, OK to Rev. Eugene and Lucy (McBurney) Shreck and passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021 in Thomas having reached the age of 93 years 3 months and 20 days.
Iola was born Christmas Eve, December 24, 1927, in a small farm house six miles north of Thomas, OK to Rev. Eugene and Lucy (McBurney) Shreck and passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021 in Thomas.
Iola attended a county school called Valley View. At the age of six, her first year of school, she came down with scarlet fever and went into a coma for four days, missing three months of school. Her teacher would come in the evenings to keep her caught up on her lessons. In the sixth grade her family moved to Thomas, where she graduated in 1946.
After graduation, Iola went to Southwestern in Weatherford, studying to become a beautician. She started working for Ruby Mosburg and Hattie McClure in their shop in Thomas.
On October 25, 1952, just three days after Sam returned to the states from serving two years fighting in the Korean War, they got married in Custer City. Five daughters were born to this union, Doris, Sheryl Ann, Lois, Carol and Karen.
Iola worked alongside of her husband Sam several decades, owning and operating a Refrigeration and Appliance Repair Shop beginning in 1961. In 1972, they also started raising parakeets in the back of the shop. At one time they had over 300 pair. Iola and Sam would load up their station wagon every three weeks with forty some baby birds and head to Oklahoma City to sell them.
Spending time together as a family was Iola's highest importance. Every summer a huge garden was planted and put up for winter months. Iola enjoyed crocheting, reading, traveling around the country side, the six of them, in their small Scotty camper, as well as going to Zapata, Texas in the winter months after retirement.
Iola is survived by four daughters, Doris (Arthur) Giabbai, Lois (Johnny) Windberry, Carol McFeeters, and Karen Hart; one sister, Violet Burris; seven grandchildren, Jerod Windberry, Ashley (Luis) Marroquin, Allyson McFeeters, Collin (Chelsea) McFeeters, Matt (Laci) Hart, Samantha (Connlley) Jezek and Abbie Hart; ten great-grandchildren, Jaxon Windberry, Jaden Windberry, Christian Marroquin, Victoria Marroquin, Berkley McFeeters, Hynlee Hart, Maylee Hart, Ryker Hart, Grey Jezek, William Jezek and Baby Boy Jezek on the way.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sam; daughter, Sheryl Ann; two sons-in-law, Mike McFeeters and Robert Hart; two brothers, Elmer and Leo; and one sister, Leta Jones.
