Funeral services for Geraldine Amelia (Hoskins) Sauer, 85 year-old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2016, 10:00 A.M. at Crosspointe Church (formerly Zion Church) with Pastor Ron Thiessen officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Geraldine was born August 16, 1930, in Chester, Oklahoma to Charley Clay and Ellen (Shaffer) Hoskins and passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016, at Weatherford Living Center. Geraldine was a longtime teacher and supporter of community projects. She began her teaching career at the age of 16, following graduation from Seiling High School, with an emergency teaching certificate from the state of Oklahoma for the one room Prosso Country School near Chester, Oklahoma. After teaching one year she began her college education at Southwestern College in Weatherford. It was at this time she met and fell in love with Ezra John Sauer and they married May 22, 1949 in Weatherford. They moved to the Sauer farm which had been homesteaded by Ezras parents in 1898. Four children were born: Steve, Andy, Debbie and James.
While raising her children, Geraldine went back to college to complete her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Elementary Education. It was then she continued her 25 year teaching career. The first three years teaching in Cimarron, Kansas and the remaining years in the Weatherford Public School System. She taught special education, the accelerated program and the majority of her years as a 5th grade classroom teacher. She was known as a very dedicated and strict teacher and wanted to see each student thrive in a learning environment.
Geraldine enjoyed quilting and embroidery work and made many quilts for family and friends over the years. Genealogy was a special hobby for her and she was able to trace her family history back to the early 1700s. She was an active member of the Weatherford History Center and helped chronicle over 60,000 obituaries on cards for public research. She belonged to the AHSGR (American Historical Society of Germans from Russia) for many years; although she kidded that she did not have any German blood in her. Geraldine was an active supporter of the Weatherford Pioneer Center, where she helped to quilt many quilts for the center and the public and helped with the annual stew dinner for over 25 years. She was active in her church, Crosspointe, as Sunday school teacher and VBS director.
Geraldine is survived by her son, Steve Sauer and wife, Martha, son, Andy Sauer and wife, Mary, daughter, Debbie Dean all of Weatherford, Oklahoma and son, James Sauer and wife, Peggy of Springfield, Missouri; one brother, Ira Hoskins of Weatherford; six grandchildren, Chris Sauer, Matthew and Lucas Sauer, John and William Sauer and Elizabeth White. Twelve great-great-grandchildren, Makenna, Emma, and Lila Sauer; Benton, Noah and Charlie Sauer; Collin and Charlotte White; Mabel and Eleanor Sauer; and Charlie and Henry Sauer. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ezra; and son-in-law, Bill Dehn.
Memorials may be made to Crosspointe church, Weatherford Pioneer Center or to the Weatherford Public Schools Foundation.
