Funeral services for Frances Drue Lewis, 101 year-old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Brack officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Frances was born January 25, 1912 in Larned, Kansas to Hiram Abraham and Mary Elizabeth (Bennyworth) Jones and passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Corn Heritage Village in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Frances family soon moved to Cherokee, Oklahoma where she attended school, graduating in 1929. After graduation Frances hitched a ride to New York City to interview for admission to the Fashion Academy. She was accepted but during this era of the Great Depression and the dust bowl days there was no money for college. Frances worked at the local soda fountain and then began working as a secretary for a Cherokee lawyer, Ira Hill, who ran for governor against Alfalfa Bill Murray. Frances and a friend managed to scrape up enough money to attend the 1934 Chicago Worlds Fair.
Frances married her high school sweetheart, Linley (Lynn) Morton Lewis on August 23, 1936. They made their home in Oklahoma City, but after a month they returned to Cherokee to help care for Frances father until his death 6 months later. Returning to Oklahoma City, Frances continued her career as a secretary for several oil and gas companies and for the president of Armor Meat Company.
Lynn and Frances moved to Weatherford in 1948 when Lynn accepted the job as Dean of the Horology (watch making) department at Southwestern State College. At Southwestern, Frances worked as a secretary for several Education Department chairmen. While there, Frances and Ruby (Drinkwater) Gartrell organized the first Miss Southwestern competition.
After a short move to Tulia, Texas in 1962, Frances and Lynn returned to Weatherford. Frances worked as a secretary to the Dean of the Pharmacy School and later as a secretary at the ,then, Security State Bank until her retirement in 1974. Frances resided at Corn Heritage Village of Weatherford from May, 2012 until her death.
Frances hobbies included hat making, sewing, needlework, quilting, painting and pottery, bridge, gardening, traveling, fishing and enjoying her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Frances Goode Circle.
Frances was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Dwayne Jones.
Frances is survived by her two daughters: Linle Levy and her husband Dr. Les Levy of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Mary Lynn Serio and her husband Jack of Valrico, Florida; seven grandchildren: Brett Blagowsky and wife Dr. Shawn Blagowsky of Plano, Texas, Barry Blagowsky and wife Monique of Edmond, Oklahoma, Linsey Jorn and husband Christian of Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Aimee Levy-Corn and husband, Kelly of Edmond, Oklahoma, Rebecca Conley and husband Ryan of Ruskin, Florida, Kelli Serio of Valrico, Florida, and Alyssa Serio of Lakeland, Florida; six great-grandchildren: Toni Ray, Jimi Blagowsky, Brianna Blagowsky, Joshua Blagowsky, Tejan Jorn, Sangye Jorn, Baillee Conley, and Karsten Corn; one great-great-grandson; Tyton Ray; and special family members: Elizabeth Beam and her children Bentley, Witten and Hollis.
Frances is also survived by her special friends and caregivers: Barbara Ogan, Genett Upton, Mary Ann Chambers and Denise Vazquez as well as her many cargivers at CHV and Russell Murray Hospice.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Weatherford.
