Funeral services for Flossie Edna (Williams) Payne, 93 year-old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church in Weatherford with Alan Quigley and Earl Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Flossie was born northeast of Colony, Oklahoma, September 6, 1923, to Jack Williams and Mary Jane (Brooks) Williams and passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Weatherford Regional Hospital. She attended country schools south of Weatherford before graduating from Weatherford High School at the age of 16, then attended Southwestern State College before marrying her childhood sweetheart, Wendell Payne. They established their home on a farm 8 miles south of Hydro where they lived and farmed until they moved to Plainview Hill southeast of Weatherford.
After 15 years of marriage while still farming, they returned to Southwestern where they both earned Bachelor of Teaching degrees. Flossie also completed work for a Master of Teaching degree, then taught in Colony and Eakly Elementary Schools 13 years before returning to SWSC to become a psychometrist. She then worked as an employee of Western Oklahoma Educational Service Center and the State Department of Education for 7 1/2 years giving tests to students in schools in Western Oklahoma.
She became a Christian at an early age and attended and served her church faithfully until health prevented it. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and was a skilled seamstress.
She is survived by daughters Joan Lunell Houk Cave of Oklahoma City and Linda Gayle Taylor LeFlore Matthews and husband Milton of Midland, TX; grandchildren Janie Houk Westbrook and husband Richard, Oklahoma City, Alesia Taylor Vance and husband John, Weatherford, Lt Colonel Joel Houk and wife Kami, Wiesbaden, Germany; and Brooke Taylor, Weatherford, Markell Matthews, Midland, TX; great grandchildren Kaylin Westbrook Molinar and husband Houston, Tyler, Kenzie and Addi Houk, Taylor Brophy and Garrett Vance; great, great granddaughter Emma Brophy; sister Juanita Holliday, Weatherford. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell, sister Marie Hunnicutt, and sons-in-law James Cave and Victor LeFlore.
Memorials may be made to Falls Creek Baptist Association or to the charity of your choice.
