Funeral services for Evelynne Maurine (Armstrong) Alvis, 90 year-old Hydro, Oklahoma resident, will be held Friday, January 20, 2017, 10:00 A.M. in The Chapel of Hydro Masonic Cemetery with Rusty Carney officiating. Services are under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Evelynne was born May 31, 1926, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Mansel and Ethel (Light) Armstrong and passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at Maple Lawn Manor in Hydro, Oklahoma. While a student at the University of Oklahoma, she met Art Alvis; they were married on December 23, 1945, at her parents home. They spent 57 years together before her husbands death in 2003.
They were blessed with two daughters, Katherine Elaine and Arta Sue. Arts work took them to Wichita Falls, TX; Beaumont, TX; Oklahoma City; Sioux City, IA; Buffalo, NY; Kansas City, MO; and Shawnee, OK. In 1977, the Alvis returned to Hydro and opened a ladies clothing store in Weatherford.
Evelynne became a Christian at an early age in the United Methodist Church of Hydro. Church has always been a big part of her life. She belonged for years to the First Christian Church of Hydro.
She belonged to the Eastern Star, the Western Plains Genealogical Society, the First Families of the Twin Territories, the 89ers Club, the Magna Carta Dames, the Daughters of Union Veterans, and the Daughters of Early American Witches, and was secretary of the Washita Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for many years.
Evelynne was active in Republican politics from the age of 10. She organized campaign offices in several states. She was President of the Pachyderm Club and the Northland Republican Club, both in Kansas City. She held an elective office in Clay County, MO, and was listed for two years in the Whos Who in Missouri Politics. In 1972, Art and Evelynne were county chairs for the Reelect the President campaign. She was a delegate to State Conventions in Missouri and worked for ABC News during the 1976 National Republican Convention in Kansas City. She met Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush, Sr., as well as Barry Goldwater, Bob Dole, Henry Kissinger, John Ashcroft and Kit Bond and Tom Coburn.
Evelynne was a longtime volunteer at the Hydro Nursing Home, at the Friends of the Library in Oklahoma City, at her daughters schools and activities. The Alvises loved to travel and had visited all 50 States, plus places beyond.
Evelynne was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Mansel Eugene and Dorsey, brothers-in-law Russell Alvis and Cecil Duff, niece Jennifer Herbert and nephew Greig Alvis, and cousin Pat Brown of Clinton. She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Malcolm H. Patterson of Hydro, Sue and William Snyder of Holland, MI; five grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren; her sister Ramona Duff of Moore; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
