Edna Doreene
Hayes
August 14, 1938 – February 22, 2020
Edna Doreene (Montgomery) Hayes was born August 14, 1938, in their home near Eakly to Volon and Mildred (Andrews) Montgomery and passed away Saturday, February 22, 2020, in Corn Heritage Village of Weatherford, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 8 days.
Edna was the oldest of 3 children. Edna attended grades 1-12 in Alfalfa, graduating high school in the spring of 1956. After graduating, she started college, studying business, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. In January 1957, she met the love of her life, Wayne Hayes. They were married one year later on January 23, 1958 and spent 62 years together.
Edna worked, while Wayne continued his education. They moved to Amarillo TX then to Stillwater, Eakly, Emporia, KS then back to Weatherford. While Wayne was in school, Edna worked for the Fire Service Training Department in Stillwater. She also served as secretary to the Weatherford Church of Christ for 7 years and was secretary at East Elementary for 12 years in Weatherford. Edna retired in 2000 at the age of 62.
Edna and Wayne had 3 children, Craig Hayes, Sharbee Heinrichs and Jarrod Hayes. Edna never intended to be a career person and she wanted to be home and raise her 3 children. She was fortunate to be able to stay home with Jarrod and she loved every minute of it.
Edna was always doing for others. She baked all kinds of foods and decorated cakes for her children, grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends. Her grandchildren loved their birthday cakes made especially for them year after year. Her grandchildren describe her cakes as immaculate and full of love. She was always taking food to the sick and to church dinners. The holidays were some of the best times where she really cooked exceptional. Her license plate on her car even reads "E-Bakes". She always promoted eating healthy and would put Wayne on several diets whether he wanted to or not! She loved working in her garden where she grew fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. She took many arrangements of flowers to friends and family to brighten their day. She could always be found at her mother's house shucking corn and snapping black eyed peas. She was known for cream corn and her famous sweet pickles that all her children and grandchildren loved! She was an amazing seamstress and made wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, her daughter's dresses and her own dresses. There was nothing that she couldn't mend.
Edna and Wayne loved traveling to many places together. They went to Hawaii, Florida, London, Paris, Branson, Red River, Colorado, Alaska and the Bahamas. They also took several cruises. She traveled with her sister, Rita to New York City and other fun places. She traveled with other friends and always had great times.
Edna was especially fond of all her grandchildren. She attended so many events and was always proud to be their grandmother. She treated each one fairly and would do anything for them. She loved her daughters-in-law and son-in-law just the same and went out of her way to make them feel like her own. She was so proud of them.
Most of all, Edna was a fine Christian woman who never wavered in her faith in God and she wanted the same for her husband and children. Her goal was to see her family in Heaven someday. She attended church regularly and was an active member of the Hydro Church of Christ for about 30 years. One of her favorite quotes in troubled times was "This too shall pass". Her children remember this quote and use it today.
Edna will be missed by many, but we all know that she is whole again and sitting in the presence of God. She lived her life in a manner that was well worthy and we know that God has said to her "Well done my good and faithful servant".
We love you mom and we will see you again on the other side of life where there will be no more sorrow or hurting and we will rein with God forever.
Edna was preceded in death by her father, Volon Montgomery. She is survived by her husband, Wayne of their home in Weatherford; mother, Mildred Hicks of Weatherford; sister, Rita Goodwin and husband, Russell of Carnegie; brother Carl Montgomery and wife, Kathy of Del Mar, CA; three children, Craig Hayes and wife, Karen of Weatherford, daughter, Sharbee Heinrichs and husband Steve of Weatherford, and Jarrod Hayes and wife, Brandy of Amarillo; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; with one on the way; plus many nephews, cousins and close life-long friends.
