Obituary

Carroll Duane Rea was born November 23, 1940, in Portales, New Mexico, to Carl and Bessie (Goodwin) Rea. He passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 23 days.

Duane was a polio survivor in his childhood and a cancer survivor later in his life. He grew up on a farm in Bovina, TX were his family raised pigs and grew cotton. He graduated from Bovina High School in 1958, where he was active in FFA, sports, and Speech and Debate. He went on to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Seminary School simultaneously, graduating in 1962. While attending his sister, Joyce's, wedding to Arlen Hamburger, he met the groom's little sister, Joy Ann Hamburger, fell in love and married on June 3, 1963. The Young couple started their adventure in Butler, OK where Duane was the Pastor at the United Methodist Church. Duane later chose to pursue a career in insurance. In 1972, Duane decided to make another change. This time it was not a change in occupation, but a change in location. He returned to Hawaii where he and Joy had their honeymoon. He loved it there so much, he left Joy to hold down the fort, and two young energetic kids, in Oklahoma while he went to secure their future in Hawaii. One month later he had secured a position at First Insurance Company, purchased a 900 square foot condo on the slopes of Diamond Head, and a 1963 Bel Air to drive. He sent for his family, and in Honolulu he raised his girls, lived in the same condo, stayed employed by the same company, but switched out vehicles a few times, until he retired in 2000. In 2004, he finally returned to the mainland eventually finding his way to Corn 0K. Duane enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles, talking theology with anyone that could keep up, playing ball with the dogs and finding neat places to eat; like White Dog Hill for his 80th birthday.

Duane is survived by his two daughters, Andrea Rea of Corn and Carol Rea-Feagaiga (Scotty) of Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Joy Rodriguez (Roman) of Montana, Alix Engler (Jordan) of Guam, Briana Harris (James) of Alaska, Sabrina Smith (Krystal) and Samson Feagaiga of North Carolina; and six great-grandchildren, Lilly, Micah, Andrew, Autumn, Jacob, and Lydia. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joy Ann Rea; and sister, Joyce Hamburger.

Memorials may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association or to the American Cancer Society.
