Funeral: 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 7th, 2014First Baptist Church

Funeral service for Byron Glenn Cox, 57 year-old Weatherford resident, will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Earl Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.

Byron was born on December 18, 1956 in Ada, Oklahoma to Darwin Glen and Gela (Abston) Cox and passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at his home in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He was raised in Ada before moving with his family to California in 1967. In September of 1970, Byron accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized. In 1971 his family returned to Oklahoma and moved to Weatherford where Byron attended school, graduating from Weatherford High School with the Class of 1975.

Byron began working with the Weatherford Police Department as a dispatcher in 1977. On February 10, 1979 Byron married Elsie Bartel in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Byron was promoted to Patrolman in 1980, continuing his long career in law enforcement. On October 20, 1981 Byron and Elsie had their first son, Michael. He was followed by Matthew on December 19, 1983. Byron attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor Degree. In 1999, after 22 years with the Weatherford Police Department he became the Chief of Police, a position he would hold for 14 years.

Byron was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weatherford, CLEET Executive Counsel, Oklahoma Chiefs of Police, and Multi County Youth Board. He enjoyed serving his community, singing in the church choir, riding his motorcycle, woodworking, OU football, and volunteering at Kiwanis Baseball Park. He faced many health challenges with the progression of diabetes the last two years. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or the Multi-County Youth Shelter.

Byron is survived by his wife, Elsie Cox, of the home; two sons, Michael Cox and his wife Terese of Chicago, Illinois and Matthew Cox of Weatherford, Oklahoma; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and James; one brother, Anthony Cox and his wife Kristine; and many other nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Randall Kevin.
