Funeral services for Betty Jean Combs, 89 year-old former Weatherford, OK resident, will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church with Earl Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mound Valley Cemetery of Thomas under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Betty Jean Combs was born September 2, 1927 near Thomas, Oklahoma to Ethel (Burris) and Herbert Skaggs and passed away Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Rivermont Retirement Community in Norman, Oklahoma at the age of 89.
Betty was born and raised in Thomas, Oklahoma and attended school there. She married Kenneth Combs in 1944 and remained happily married to him until his death in 1984. They had two daughters, Janice and Sandra. Both daughters share many happy memories from their childhood including when Betty and Kenneth served as their class parents, chaperoned dances, and ate lunch together at home every day watching As the World Turns. She started working for Security State Bank in Weatherford in 1951 as a bookkeeper, served as a teller, cashier and loan teller. She retired after 42 consecutive years with the same bank, which is quite an accomplishment.
She had many friends in Weatherford and enjoyed playing Bridge, Bunco, and Train with them. She especially enjoyed her Happy Hour and Supper Club friends. They enjoyed many great memories together. In 2012, she moved to Norman to be close to family. She loved her new environment, but she missed her Weatherford friends and church family.
Betty loved spending time at her cabin at Ft. Cobb Lake and was a top-notch fisherman. She always baited her own hook. Betty enjoyed traveling and shared many happy vacations with her entire family including many trips to Lake of the Ozarks and Grand Lake. Her three grandchildren looked forward to spending time with Gramps and Grandma, who spoiled them by taking them to TG&Y to buy a toy. Holidays were always celebrated together with family and were very special. She remained active and in recent times enjoyed frequent drives to Lake Thunderbird with her Rivermont buddy, Al.
Betty was known for her feistiness and was famous for keeping her daughters and grandkids in check by reminding them if they didnt behave she would get in their eyes like a juicy onion!
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Janice Isenberg and her husband, Tim of McAlester and Sandra Hook and her husband, Carl of Norman. Shes also survived by her three grandchildren and their spouses and seven great grandchildren: Kristie (Isenberg) Cantu and her husband, John (children Sophia and Ian) of Austin, TX; Cori (Hook) Loomis and her husband, Michael (sons Austin, Carter, and Trevor) of Oklahoma City; and Kevin Hook and his wife, Kristin (children Kyle and Kate) of Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Kenneth.
