Funeral services for Aubrey Neal Cowan, 82 year-old Weatherford, Oklahoma resident, will be held Monday, September 29, 2014, 10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church with Earl Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow at Cheyenne Cemetery, in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
Aubrey was born April 16, 1932, to Burl Truitt and Evie Lorraine (Gammell) Cowan in Mangum, Oklahoma and passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at Corn Heritage Village of Weatherford. While growing up, he resided in Mangum, Sayre, Weatherford and Altus, graduating from Altus High School in 1952. Aubrey served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and was stationed in France during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the Army, he entered Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. On August 18, 1956, Aubrey married Nancy Kirby of Sentinel, Oklahoma. He graduated from SWOSU in 1961. Aubrey was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1956 and served as the pastor of the following churches: Colony Indian Baptist (2 yrs), Strong City Baptist (4 yrs), Delhi Baptist (1 yrs), First Baptist Church of Lone Wolf (1 yrs), First Baptist Church of Mountain View (11 yrs), First Baptist Church of Cheyenne (11 yrs), First Baptist Church of Snyder (6 yrs), Deer Creek Baptist of Edmond (2 yrs), and Pleasant Valley Baptist of Hydro (13 yrs). Upon his retirement, Aubrey and Nancy moved their membership to First Baptist Church of Weatherford, Aubrey enjoyed spending time in the mountains riding mules, snowbirding in south Texas, golfing with friends, and upholstering furniture. His greatest joy was attending his grandchildrens activities which included stock shows, football and volleyball games, horse shows, wrestling and golf tournaments.
Aubrey was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Virginia Stookesberry. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy of their home in Weatherford, Oklahoma; two sons, Greg Cowan of Garnett, Kansas and Brad Cowan and wife, Kris of Goodland, Kansas; daughter, Missy Heard and husband, Corky of Clinton, Oklahoma; sister, Jo Haney and husband, Charles of Cleveland, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Brandon Cowan and wife, Kayla, Amber Reents and husband, Colt, Jason Cowan, Lacie Cowan, Jessica Heard, and Harley Heard; two great-grandsons, Cason Reents and Braxton Cowan; and special friends: Robert Lindamood of Weatherford, Oklahoma and Kathi Davis of Topeka, Kansas.
