Anne
Denney
November 30, 1930 – December 20, 2022
Anne Avery Denney was born Sunday, November 30, 1930 to Henry Immel Avery and Pauline Laizure Avery in Enid, Oklahoma and passed from this life on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 92 years and 20 days.
Anne grew up in Oklahoma (Enid, El Reno and Kingfisher) until the onset of World War II when her father joined the Navy. She spent formative years in Norfolk, Virginia and Mobile, Alabama before the family returned to Kingfisher, Oklahoma after the war.
Upon graduation from high school, Anne attended business school in Oklahoma City and went to work as a secretary. After an engagement ended, she left her job and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma where she pledged Pi Beta Phi and graduated in 1953. While in college, she rekindled a relationship with Clarke (Drew) Denney, whom she had known as a child and teenager in Kingfisher. After his service in the Navy during the Korean conflict, they were married in August of 1953.
After Drew completed dental school in 1958, they moved to Weatherford, Oklahoma where they started their family and became involved in church and community life. Clarke, Craig and Chris were her sons, all three of whom she was extremely proud. It was during this time that she recommitted her life to Jesus Christ and began to live out her faith.
Anne devoted her life to her family and her church as she and Drew were involved in the choir and in Sunday school at First Baptist Church. A seminal period in her life was stepping out in faith, in 1972, to help start Trinity Baptist Church, where she remained a member until 1981. She and Drew remained very active in the lives of their sons, their church and their community. She was a member of PEO Chapter FG and the Weatherford Sorosis Club. She was an accomplished pianist and accompanied Drew and others at the piano as well as playing for church services. Many happy times were spent singing around the grand piano with Anne on the keyboard.
After Drew's untimely death and the death of her parents, she relocated to New Castle, Colorado in 2000 and returned to Weatherford in 2005. She lived independently until a fall in 2013 whereupon she moved into assisted living. In 2019, she moved to Dallas to be nearer to family. She survived a bout with Covid in 2021 and came back strong. However, after a fall in August, her health began to decline.
Suffice it to say, she never met a stranger and was always willing to share her faith story with those she encountered. She will lovingly be remembered as a strong woman who loved to laugh and who lived what she believed as she sought to bring others to Christ.
She is survived by her sons; Clarke (Terri Jo) of Houston, Texas, Craig (Ann) of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and Chris of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Joseph (Cassie), Avery (Tim), Andrew, Connor (Kelsi), and great grandchildren Emilia and Bennett.
She was preceded in death by her husband Drew, her parents Henry and Pauline Avery, and her mother-in-law Mary Kathryn Denney.
